The faculty appeared split on whether to vote no confidence in President David Schmidly and Executive Vice President David Harris at its meeting in Popejoy Hall on Wednesday. The Faculty Governance Committee said it will announce the results of the vote by noon today.
Editor, God willing, I'll graduate in May with my MBA from the Anderson School of Management. But it doesn't really matter what degree I'll have, because it'll still be hard to find a job given the current economic conditions. Editor, House Bill 383 passed the New Mexico House of Representatives on Friday. As a New Mexico resident and voter, I am disturbed by the blatant attempt to rob New Mexicans of their votes when it comes to choosing our president. This bill would take New Mexico's five Electoral College votes and give them to whomever won the national popular vote.

About 500 faculty members met in Popejoy Hall on Wednesday to discuss and vote on five motions regarding the way the University is run. Each motion required 50 percent of the vote to pass, and the faculty passed all of them. The faculty have resolved: 1) To request an external audit of the University's finances to establish where educational funds have been spent in the last six years.
The magic number is now three, after the UNM men's basketball team handed TCU a 76-62 loss. The Lobos will need to win out if they want a share of the Mountain West Conference title. The Horned Frogs visited The Pit on Tuesday for the Lobos' second-to-last home game.
UNM has invited former Mexican President Vicente Fox to deliver the 2009 commencement address. Some campus groups are taking issue with the choice, citing allegations of human-rights abuses during Fox's tenure as president. The selection of Fox as commencement speaker coincides with an agreement signed between UNM and Centro Fox, the former president's public policy and educational institute.
Editor, We are writing in protest of Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico and CEO of Coca-Cola, serving as the commencement speaker this spring and of UNM's collaboration with Fox as described on the front page of UNM's Web site. As two former presidents of the Student Organization of Latin American Studies, we are appalled at UNM's collaboration with a man who has been accused of presiding over human-rights abuses of indigenous peoples, women and human rights activists, among others.
One of UNM's oldest programs is poised to mail rejection letters to all applicants seeking Ph.D.s from UNM. Hispanic Linguistics, one of three graduate programs overseen by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, is losing its only full-time linguistics professor to Penn State.

It's the end of a two-a-day practice. UNM swimmers take laps in the pool for two hours at 6:30 a.m., and they're finishing up afternoon practice with a run after lifting weights. Their tired bodies might prefer to slowly cruise the few miles, but one force is pushing them harder: Their 33-year-old coach is beating them.
UNM is adding three degree programs for the next academic year. A bachelor of fine arts degree in film and digital media will begin accepting students this fall. A teaching certificate in biomedical sciences and a master's of science for physician assistants will also begin accepting applicants.
Editor, Regarding student Jordan Sayre's letter entitled "Daily Lobo has been biased in coverage of Schmidly" on Feb. 23, it's journalism 101 to know that when a dog bites a man, it is not news, but when a man bites a dog, it is news. What David Schmidly does right is not news because that is what he is expected to do and is being paid to do.
Despite the hiring freeze at UNM, applicants are still being considered for director of Admissions, a position deemed "mission-critical" by the Provost's Office. However, at least three candidates who have been offered the position have turned it down. Vice President of Enrollment Management Carmen Alvarez Brown interviewed Richard Matthew Hulett last week, and he declined the position.
It is not the best of times; it is not the worst of times. It is a time for President David Schmidly to set aside aphorisms - especially those that invoke decapitated autocrats - and speak plainly to his employees. Yes, employees, not subjects or serfs.
At last, a 16-year drought is over. For the first time since 1992, the UNM skiing team made its way to victory at the NCAA West Regional/Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championship last weekend in Truckee, Calif. The desert-locked Lobos beat out seven schools including the top three finishers from last year's NCAA Tournament: Denver, Colorado and Utah.
TCU's Zvonko Buljan was heckled for a reason. Buljan's emotions flared up often in the Horned Frogs' 76-62 loss to the UNM men's basketball team Tuesday. At the 9:06 first-half mark, Buljan jousted underneath with UNM's Will Brown. Whatever Buljan said, he got a reaction out of Brown.
