Ask Dr. Peg

Dear Dr. Peg, I have serious acne, but not on my face - on my back. This has a nasty side effect of making little bloodstains on the back of my nightshirt, because I unconsciously squeeze while asleep. How can I reduce the number of zits on my back? Dear Sufferer, Zits suck, as if I need to tell you.

Lobos pummel cold-shooting Cowboys

The Pit poltergeist continued to haunt Wyoming's Brandon Ewing on Tuesday. It got to the point where it didn't matter who covered Ewing. His shadow probably could've gotten the job done. And whatever shooting syndrome the senior contracted, he infected his Wyoming teammates with it, too.

Werewolf-vampire action trumps plot in 'Underworld'

The best thing that can be said about "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" is that it could have been a lot worse. All the elements that make up the pure awesomeness of the first two movies are there - though "awesome" is definitely a relative term. No one saw "Underworld" for the emotional impact, but something is missing from "Rise of the Lycans.

Talent promoter aims to champion local musicians

Artists get scammed all the time, event producer and talent promoter Danette Lovato Pimentel said, particularly by restaurants. They tell the musicians to play a free two- to three-hour set, she said, and if the customers respond positively, maybe they'll hire the band.

Schmidly to stand alone before faculty

Faculty members will meet with President David Schmidly - but not David Harris or Jamie Koch - within the next 10 days to discuss how administrative actions have affected the Legislature's view of UNM. Richard Wood, chairman of the Faculty Governance Committee, said the Faculty Constitution demands that the meeting occur in a quick and timely fashion.

Daily Lobo Spotlight

Daily Lobo: Why film? Nathaniel Chavez: Why film? Well, originally I was going to be doing theater because that's my passion. I've been doing it ever since I was little, and then because of my disability - I get money from the (Department of Vocational Rehabilitation), and they kind of wanted me to pick a degree that would really get me more employed right after I get out.

Obama has already failed to deliver the change he promised

Editor, According to an article in The Guardian, Barack Obama's inauguration is estimated to have cost $150 million. It's certainly the most expensive inauguration in American history. I understand that this was a historic event because Obama is the first black man to occupy the White House, but was it truly necessary to spend this much money during this severe economic crisis? Also, it seems to me that the new $819 billion bailout package is an incredible amount of wasteful government spending, since the previous $700 billion bailout package that we heard about a few months ago was supposed to rescue our economy from going into a recession.

Web sites that will keep you clicking

There's a lot of crap on the Internet. With more than 8 billion Web pages in Google's directory, what's a guy to do? How do you know the sites that are worth your time? I've got your back on this one. After sifting through the ashes for the golden nuggets, I bring you four wonders of the Web.

Anthropology museum, class help dispel idea of creationism

Editor, It is now the 21st century, which is why I find it amazing to see some of my fellow students at UNM still buying into ideas that were dispelled in the 18th century. The first scientists to show that creationism was wrong were not biologists, whom most people would think, but geologists.

Fee board awaits details on athletics funding request

The Student Fee Review Board tabled a funding request from the Athletics Department at the board's first deliberation meeting Saturday. The department's representative could not account for where all the requested funding would go, and SFRB members decided to revisit the issue when the Athletics Department can provide the information.

Ethnic centers help students; Lottery needs improvements

Editor, Lawrence Allen makes one decent point and two completely ignorant and venomous ones in his letter to the Daily Lobo on Friday. I will leave critique of the first one to those more informed on the topic (a move Allen would have been wise to emulate), but on the second one, I understand the angst white people feel about ethnic and other support programs.

Center gives gamers high-tech fix

It's not that Stuart Hidalgo played too many video games. He would log maybe two or three hours of "World of Warcraft" every day. But that happened during his spare time, once dinner was out of the way and the kids were off to bed. Either way, Hidalgo's wife wanted answers.

Only those who lack faith need proof that the Bible is true

Editor, After reading "Archaeological evidence proves the Bible is a reliable source" in the Daily Lobo on Jan. 23, I just kept wondering why the faithful need proof. If you are looking for proof in the Bible, you are missing the point. Many scholars agree that there was a man named Jesus running around Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.

A response to criticism

More than 230 faculty members have signed a petition that calls for a special meeting to address their "crisis of confidence" in President David Schmidly and other administrative officials, whose actions, they claim, have led the Legislature to propose sweeping budget cuts for UNM.

Departments shouldn't have to rely on Legislature for funding

Editor, I'm sure my opinion may be unpopular, but I make no apologies. Being new to UNM, the bashing and criticism directed at President David Schmidly shocks me. I do not understand the need for so many vice presidents and some other decisions he has made, but the budget cuts that are being proposed are something different.

UNM slips to Utah in 4th; coach misses win No. 300

It all vanished. A 50-45 lead for the UNM women's basketball team with 1:23 left in the game - gone. Quickly, it turned into a 53-50 loss to Utah on Sunday at The Pit. The Lobos can thank Utah's Morgan Warburton for that, as the last 3-pointer of her 18 points proved to be the game winner.
