Ramirez: Plan neglects transfer credit acceptance

Several presidential advisers, including GPSA president Christopher Ramirez, have expressed reservations to the Board of Regents about the plan to raise admissions requirements. Ramirez said he knows students who transferred to Main Campus from CNM and UNM branches only to find out that their credits wouldn't be accepted.

U.S. could solve its problems if everyone lived like Schrader

Editor, In defense of Don Schrader, embarrassment is also an expression of pity. It is embarrassing to see someone totally unaware of his public self-indictment. Andres Saenz's diatribe against Schrader is filled with clandestine homophobia and all sorts of latent racism directed against a hapless individual whose only offense is to point out the offensive hypocrisies that govern and corrupt this country.

'Sleepover policy' unclear on rule for same-sex relationships

UNM's on-campus housing policies prohibit sleepovers between students of the opposite sex, but the rules may fail to address same-sex relationships. The "sleepover policy," which RAs are charged with enforcing, states that a person of the opposite sex cannot spend the night in a student's dorm room, but a person of the same sex can sleep over for up to three days as long as he or she checks in with the front desk.

Abortion-rights arguments ignore the truth: A baby dies

Editor, In their respective letters to the editor, Betty Blackburn and Kysten Diener tell us how society is better because we have unfettered abortion, offering arguments that ignore the fundamental issue: Abortion kills a baby. The straw-man arguments are the slogans and mantras that ignore this basic truth.

Artists turn bathroom into gallery

Artists are decorating and enhancing toilet seats for the Wooden Cow Gallery's art show "Art de Toilette." Elaine Russell, member of the Wooden Cow cooperative, organized the show, which will be displayed in the gallery's bathroom. Artists pay a $20 entry fee, which also pays for the wooden toilet seat.

Obama threatens citizens' Second Amendment rights

Editor, The Second Amendment says, "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Presently, the right to bear arms is being threatened by Barack Obama. A firearm is a tool.

RAs aim to improve student life

UNM's Resident Advisors are charged with keeping students who live in the dorms in order and improving the quality of life on campus. RAs spend about 20 hours per week managing 40 to 100 students, according to the Resident Life Web site. They are also required to attend weekly staff meetings, take no classes on Thursday evenings and take on no other jobs.

UNM needs to encourage extracurricular opportunities

Editor, I applied for a prestigious, unpaid biology internship in San Diego. It is a 40-hour-a-week, 16-week commitment, including lectures, research and field trips. I thought it reasonable to get a jump on the process with the Biology Department to ensure I would get credit for it.

Abortion is only justifiable if the mother's life is at risk

Editor, I didn't want to get absorbed into the intense abortion debate, but I believe Betty Blackburn and Kysten Diener made some serious ethical flaws in their abortion-rights arguments. Blackburn claims no man has the right to tell women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies.

Daily Lobo Spotlight

Daily Lobo: Can you describe what it feels like standing in front of that huge wall of sound during halftime? Chad Simons: It's a lot of fun. It's loud, and it can be really exciting. It has the potential to really create a huge reaction from the people who are watching, and that's what we strive to do.

Musician flashes flair for theater

A condenser mic is enough to amplify Shara Worden's wineglass arrangements onstage. Worden, magical-realism composer/arranger of the band My Brightest Diamond, will bring her string-based music to the Cooperage on Sunday. "I do all the arranging, and I tell everybody what to do," she said.

Tony Danridge makes a fadeaway jumper at The Pit on Monday. Danridge scored 16 points, and the Lobos fended off Cal State Northridge 85-74 to improve to 3-2 on the year.

UNM overpowers Cal State Northridge

All the Windex in the world couldn't keep the UNM men's basketball team from streaking to an 85-74 victory over Cal State Northridge on Monday at The Pit. In a game that was more lopsided than the final score suggests, UNM made sure to close out this game after it choked away a nine-point lead with 3:38 left in Saturday's depressing 72-71 defeat at the hands of UCF.

Obama's Cabinet choices show that change isn't forthcoming

Editor, Is it a coincidence that practically all of Barack Obama's appointed cabinet members are former associates of the Bill Clinton glory days of the '90s? Why is Obama begging Hillary Clinton to accept his secretary of state job? Do they have to do the hard work for you now while you receive all the praise and glory? Rahm Emanuel, Eric Holder, Tom Daschle, Bill Richardson and Joe Biden - all of these folks are not new, fresh faces like you told your blind followers.

Setting aside areas for smoking would keep everyone happy

Editor, The idea of trying to ban smoking from campus is completely ridiculous. I am not a smoker, but I do believe if you want to smoke, then go for it. It is a free country, isn't it? I do believe, however, that people who do not want to be exposed to the harmful chemicals from tobacco smoke should not be forced to.

UNM must provide role models for American Indian students

Editor, It was really disappointing to read the article about Joy Harjo leaving the Creative Writing program at UNM because of one individual's behavior. Harjo said this person's behavior is problematic to the extent that the department "has been deeply compromised," and the best instructors are leaving or are in the process of leaving.

Tony Danridge drives past a UCF defender on Saturday at The Pit. Danridge added 13 points, but the Lobos blew a 9-point lead with less than four minutes left in the game. The Golden Knights squeaked by 72-71 off a last-second 3-pointer.

UCF makes comeback to beat Lobos by 1

Down 6 with 50 seconds left in game, the University of Central Florida's Golden Knights seemed finished. The UNM men's basketball team was about to hand the Golden Knights another chink in their armor with a second loss - but the Lobos couldn't hold on to the lead Saturday night, dropping the game 72-71.
