Lobos Basketball Tournament

Amy Beggin dished out seven assists Saturday against Alcorn State. Last year, Beggin averaged 10.9 points per game and shelled out 141 assists on the season.
Sports

Beggin's unselfish play crucial on the court

There is a spike in the speed of the game as the opposition decides to employ some full-court pressure. But for Amy Beggin, things slow to a crawl. She can clearly see all the passing lanes open up. The thing is, not everybody can. Yes, you can teach players the fundamentals - how to keep their heads up, how to maneuver through the death traps in a press.

Market coordinator's firing raises questions

Rose Chavez, a UNM alumna who organized the Lobo Growers Market, has been controversially removed from her position as coordinator of the market. As a result, the Oct. 21 market was canceled. Chavez said she was fired when Bruce Milne, executive director of Sustainability Studies, and Terry Horger, program manager of Sustainability Studies, said she wasn't performing to their expectations.

Ask Dr. Peg

Dear Dr. Peg, Can using latex condoms frequently result in urinary tract infections in women? Do latex condoms pose any risks for women if used frequently? My first reaction to your question is that you're at greater risk if you don't use a condom, unless you replace it with another form of contraception.

Getting involved could have positive effect on campus

Editor, Tuesday's Daily Lobo featured several letters to the editor along a similar theme: The administration needs to pay closer attention to the needs of students, faculty and staff and engage them in determining priorities. There can be no doubt that we face tough and uncertain times, not just at the University, but in our broader communities as well.

Junior Ian Clark, left, has been sidelined for two games this season with an injured shoulder, but Clark will play in UNM's season finale against Colorado State on Saturday in Fort Collins, Colo. The Lobos aren't bowl-eligible for the first time in eight

UNM focuses on spoiling CSU's bowl hopes

It's the last gasp - but all the UNM football team can do is exhale in disgust. For the first time in eight years, the Lobos aren't bowl-eligible at 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference. UNM was the lone MWC team that was bowl-eligible every year since 2001.

Baby boomers are passionate about creating better future

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to Jeffrey Harrisman's sweeping indictment of baby boomers. Perhaps Harrisman is not aware that there are plenty of us boomers on staff who are not especially tickled to be told we won't get a raise this year, that our departments cannot purchase needed equipment or supplies or to watch apparent cronyism siphon off those funds that could be used for purposes we consider much more worthy than another VP or repairs and upgrades to the stadium or golf course.

A small electrical fire broke out in George Pearl Hall on Wednesday. No one was injured, and the building sustained minimal damage, authorities said.

Alford aims to acclimate freshmen to charged fans

It's easy to describe the UNM men's basketball team's season in one word: uncertainty. Take six freshmen, three seniors, sophomore point guard Dairese Gary and multidimensional junior Roman Martinez, and then subtract J.R. Giddens, Jamaal Smith and Darren Prentice.

Abortion not comparable to modern civil rights injustices

Editor, I was appalled to read the column titled "Abortion a modern-day injustice" in Monday's Daily Lobo not only for its staunch hypocrisy but its clever misuse of "the facts." Comparing the injustices of slavery and racism to that of abortion and the reproductive rights of women is about as naive and ludicrous as one might consider arguing.

Schmidly, regents support entertainment over faculty

Editor, I wonder if President David Schmidly and the regents read the newspapers or watch TV news. As I was reading the Daily Lobo story on how poor UNM is and how it needs to freeze workers' salaries and hiring, I saw a TV story on how UNM is getting ready to spend $60 million for renovations to The Pit.

Correction

The letter to the editor published in Monday's Daily Lobo, "Schrader's lifestyle teaches responsible global citizenship," was written by Chuck Hoskins, a part-time instructor at UNM. The letter has no affiliation with Charles Hoskins, the lecturer for the Naval ROTC program.
