Palin should clarify stance on abortion for voters' sakes

Editor, As Sen. John McCain and his vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, travel around the country, we're watching as they try to sell the McCain-Palin ticket to moderate, independent-leaning women voters who will determine the outcome of this election.

Palin will represent women, rural US

John McCain surprised many people when he chose Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska to be his vice president. She was not well-known by most people, but since her nomination and acceptance at the Republican Convention, it seems people either love her or hate her. These sentiments are strongly influenced by one's political standing.

Quarterback Brad Gruner will make his second career start and his first home start against Wyoming on Saturday. UNM will attempt to avenge a 14-10 home loss to the Cowboys in 2006.

Coming off a win, QB preps for home start

It's Homecoming Week and UNM redshirt freshman quarterback Brad Gruner's first home start. Gruner will make his second career start Saturday and will look for his second career win. In his first collegiate start last week against NMSU, Gruner trudged through a dismal first half of offense, helping the Lobos storm back to beat the Aggies with 25 second-half points.

Biden has the experience, wisdom to lead country

Ever since the decision was made to allow the presidential nominee to pick a running mate, it has been a point of strategy to decide who would best fill out each party's ticket. With the politics of running mates and every other detail of a campaign under great scrutiny, it is more important than ever to make every detail perfect.

Column: NFC now a contender for Super Bowl spotlight

Since 2000, the AFC has been the superior conference in the NFL, with the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 2007 New York Giants being the only NFC teams to win Super Bowls this decade. But after New York's monumental upset of then 18-0 New England in the Super Bowl - coupled with Tom Brady's season-ending injury - it seems the balance of power has shifted to the NFC.

UNM: Water work will be finished by end of month

Construction on a water project that began in May was scheduled to be completed Tuesday. But if you've walked around campus, you probably noticed it wasn't. Project manager Maria Probasco said construction will wrap up this month, as long as the water lines pass structural tests.

A long time coming

Mechanical engineering students and faculty installed solar panels on the roof of their building Tuesday. The installation marks the last step in a sustainability project that has been on the department's agenda for more than 20 years. Professor Andrea Mammoli said the panels were installed alongside ones the department purchased in the 1980s in an effort to conserve energy in the building.

Question & Answer

Foreign policy took a back seat to economic talk during the first presidential debate Friday, but Mark Peceny, professor and chair of UNM's political science department, took time to explain some of the finer points of the original topic to the Daily Lobo.

UNM not communicating well in developing relocation plan

Editor, As an employee who deals daily with students and prospective students of UNM, I cannot imagine trying to direct students off campus to access basic services currently available in the Student Services Center. Students conduct the majority of their school business on campus and have little time to now commute off campus for these basic services.

Art exhibit fosters culture of graffiti (Slideshow)

Only lawyers and painters can change black to white, attorney Joseph Sullivan said. He said attorneys change their arguments from case to case, just like graffiti artists can change their medium from wall to canvas. Sullivan will be among several artists featured at Bomb the Canvas, an art exposition designed to illustrate hip-hop culture through graffiti.

Center necessary for connecting students, administration

Editor, I am in my fourth year at UNM, and over the years I have become all too familiar with the unbearably long lines (that at least I could avoid by taking a number, going to class and then coming back to Financial Aid only to wait another half hour before service), the miscommunication that often ensues between myself, the Financial Aid Office, the Scholarship Office and Cashier Department, and, finally, with the boisterous bureaucratic bumblings of misinformed, ill-mannered and unfriendly higher-ups at Student Services.

Performer to promote deaf awareness at event

Chances are most people have no idea this week is National Deaf Awareness Week. For the deaf community, that's a problem. Picture this: A deaf person makes a phone call, using a Video Relay Service - commonly abbreviated VRS - and when the hearing person answers, they hear that abbreviation, have no idea what it means and hangs up.

Moving Student Services will make bad service even worse

Editor, This University's inability to properly gauge the needs of its students has again been demonstrated in the recent mass e-mail sent in response to an article concerning the new Student Success Center. Is the University seriously suggesting that creating such a facility as this one mile from campus will help students? Off the top of my head, I can point out several problems.

Moving Student Services Center a step in the wrong direction

Editor, As an alumna and current staff member, the proposed move of the Student Services Center off campus seems to not be considering all of the impacts on students, staff and faculty. While I don't disagree that a more coordinated approach to handling our relationship with students would be beneficial, moving Student Services off campus addresses the space issue of how to get these services integrated, but it leaves out the most important piece: service to students.
