McCain's sexism accusations intended to deceive lazy voters

Editor, John McCain and Republicans around the country have been quick to call any criticism of Sarah Palin sexism. The latest accusation stems from a comment Barack Obama made regarding McCain's claim to be a force for change in Washington. He used the phrase "You can put lipstick on a pig; it is still a pig," which is a well-known and often-used term in politics.

Make your voice heard by voting against two-party status quo

Editor, I want to take a moment to echo a few ideas that were presented by Lila Sanchez in her Sept. 10 letter to the editor. Voting for the lesser of two evils in politics will result in exactly that: evil. Voters need to realize if we really want to change the course of the nation, we cannot keep voting with this insane mentality that a lesser of two evils will actually be beneficial to our country.

Attuning to calmness and clarity

Most people are asleep at 5 a.m. At the Albuquerque Zen Center, at 2300 Garfield Ave. S.E., practitioners of Zen Buddhism are settling down to meditate at that time. It's one of many open meditation sessions at the center held throughout the week. "It's for people who get up," said Seiju Bob Mammoser, the center's abbot.

Freshman honored for Scout service

UNM freshman Jake Wellman was honored last week by President Bush and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his work with the Boy Scouts' ArrowCorps5 project. In December, Wellman's peers elected him to be national chief of the Order of the Arrow, which allowed him to help oversee five nationwide service projects this summer.

Electrical and computer engineering students built and programmed robots for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Centennial Engineering Center on Sunday. The center is the second largest building on Main Campus, after Zimmerman Library, UNM spokeswoman Karen Wentworth said in an e-mail.

The peace symbol turns 50 this year. And to celebrate, the UNM Peace Studies Program is holding its Peace Fair in SUB ballrooms A and B on Wednesday. City Councilman Ray Garduno will open the ceremony by declaring Sept. 17 Albuquerque Peace Day. Le Chat Lunatique closes the day with a free concert in the SUB at 6:30 p.

UNM should use its money to treat all employees fairly

Editor, According to an article published by the Albuquerque Journal on Sept. 7, UNM now spends 71 percent more on executive salaries than it did in 2002. Tuition and fees have also increased by more than 52 percent since 2002. It disgusts me to see that as I pay more every semester to attend UNM, the University asserts it cannot afford to pay custodians for a five-day work week.

Camaraderie connects motley musicians

Twins Josh and Jesse Hasko traveled all over North America for two years before they moved to New Mexico in 2006 and formed the instrumental band North America. "Now that we are in the desert, we feel that it subconsciously affects our music," Josh said. "A lot of our music is based on a really blissful, very simplistic mood.

GOP favors beauty over brains when selecting candidates

Editor, I just watched the ABC interview with Gov. Sarah Palin. She seems scarily ignorant and yet scarily certain in her views. Perhaps she is too ignorant to know she is ignorant, much like Condoleezza Rice, who has the brains but is always impeccably confident and must always be right in interviews while defending her boss.

Evolution, creationism should be taught hand-in-hand

Editor, I'm writing in response to a couple items from Sara Grover's letter in Wednesday's paper. First, I'd like to address the part about mandatory teaching of creationism in schools. I am a Christian. However, that doesn't affect my viewpoint on teaching creationism in schools.

Victory, at last

Nothing needed to be said. The score - 36-28 UNM - served as the sole motivating purpose for the Lobo football team's defense when it took the field with 1:27 left in the fourth quarter. "Every single guy knew that the game was on the defense's shoulders," linebacker Zach Arnett said.

Lobos lose to Cal Poly after Akron win

It didn't come as a surprise. After defeating No. 2-ranked Akron 1-0 on Friday at the UNM Soccer Complex, UNM's James Urbany bragged to GoLobos.com. "We're one of the best teams in the nation," he said. "We studied hard for this game. We knew each one of their players.

Throwing away your vote won't bring about change

Editor, In Wednesday's issue of the Daily Lobo, Lila Sanchez points out some of the problems with America's two-party system. The candidates are very much like the ones that have come before them. The nominees of both major parties are monetarily influenced by big donors and corporations.

Americans put personal desires before national well-being

Editor, There is an often-quoted statement attributed to the Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville: "America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great." If, in fact, Tocqueville made that statement, he did so a few centuries ago.

University should hire a CEO to run it like the business it is

Editor, I probably speak for most students when I ask: Since when did UNM get the audacity to ask that we live on campus rather than commute? Wednesday's article about the struggles of a commuter campus hacked me off, and here's why: Student tuition and course fees account for only 3 percent of UNM's gross income per fiscal year.

Column: Belichick a no-fun, fascist win freak

That column I wrote a couple weeks ago in which I proudly proclaimed "America will finally - after waiting nearly 14 years - witness America's Team win its first Super Bowl since 1995" is starting to develop nicely. I'd call it a prophecy, but last time I did that, well, prophecy kind of faltered.
