After injury, Quin focused on the field

UNM senior and cornerback Glover Quin has solved the injury riddle. After overcoming a serious groin injury in his junior year, Quin still managed to receive Honorable Mention All-Mountain West Conference last year. Students parking on campus get fewer spaces for more money

Parking has become a serious problem for many students at UNM - permits have become more expensive, and the scarcity of spaces has forced some people to settle for lots far from campus. UNM's Parking and Transportation Services representatives said they are working to remedy these problems and help students take advantage of their best options.

Column: NFL preseason a time for injuries

Just weeks into the National Football League's preseason, three Pro Bowl defenders are badly injured, and one is out for the season. The NFL preseason is just too long - and kind of unnecessary. Newly acquired Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor, San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawn Merriman and the New York Giants' Osi Umenyiora are already injured before the season has started.

Welcome Back Days:

Want to stay healthy this semester? You can start by washing your hands. Jo Antreasian, the clinic program coordinator for the Student Health Center, said cleanliness is the easiest way to stay healthy, but many students neglect it. Antreasian was one of several representatives at Safety, Health, Wellness and ROTC Day on Tuesday, part of the week-long Welcome Back Days.

Last season, the UNM women's soccer team made history by recording a third straight winning season at 8-5-4. The Lobos are returning 16 players and welcoming 15 new ones.

Lobos confident in youthful team

Coming off an 8-5-4 record last year, the UNM women's soccer team solidified its third straight winning season. The team also made history in the process - it was the first time UNM had three consecutive winning seasons. Head coach Kit Vela said it's an accomplishment, given the youth and inexperience her team had last season.

Column: Cowboys' dream lineup reminiscent of '95 team

Dreams do come true. Or should I say, dreams will come true. America will finally - after waiting nearly 14 years - witness America's Team win its first Super Bowl since 1995. Honestly, check out the roster. I get goose bumps just looking at it. It reminds me of the Dream Team we put together in '95, with Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, "Neon" Deion Sanders, Daryl Johnston, Jay Novacek, Charles Haley - need I go on? This year's roster boasts a similar collection of star-studded players: Tony Romo, T.

Allowing firearms on campus will do more harm than good

Editor, I was disturbed to read Jean Aragon's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo. I sincerely hope New Mexico's concealed-carry training doesn't include the notion that being licensed includes the right to carry concealed weapons everywhere but UNM, as Aragon says.

Vote for a candidate who will part ways with Bush's policies

Editor, This is in response to the Aug. 17 letter written by UNM student Andres Saenz on the election. I urge all Americans to see beyond what the mass media and political ads say of either candidate. Instead, take a deeper look into what each candidate has to offer.

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader speaks during a rally Tuesday in the SUB. Nader encouraged students to vote for small-party candidates and spoke about student and environmental issues.

Small-party talk

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader visited UNM on Tuesday to drum up student interest in his campaign before making his way to the Democratic National Convention in Denver. About 90 students and faculty members crowded in SUB Ballroom C to ask Nader questions and to support his grassroots campaign for the presidential seat.

Take time to fact-check before spreading lies about Obama

Editor, It's a shame we have to read nonsense in the Daily Lobo letters like "Even for faithful Democrats, Obama is the wrong choice" on Monday. That is as silly as the lies being spread in e-mails written by right-wing smear merchants about Sen. Barack Obama.

Comic specializes in the abstract

Comedian Chris Clobber answers his phone with a long sentence in French when he doesn't recognize the incoming number. "I just do that to throw off people," he said. His brand of comedy is the same way. To get a laugh, he freaks out the audience instead of trying to relate.

Band's music fuses upbeat, melancholy

The Handsome Family's music comes from the gallows. Their lyrics stand alone as poetic works, artfully twisting tragic tales into epic epitaphs. You could imagine each song as a long posting on a gravestone. They keep it simple with guitar, bass, banjo and autoharp.

Students say dorm renovations not enough

Campus housing underwent upgrades and renovations this summer in time for incoming students. But some students say the upgrades only scratched the surface of what the dorms need. Walt Miller, associate vice president of Student Life, said the renovations are the first phase of a larger renovation process.

Criticism of Obama makes untrue, unsupported claims

Editor, I'm writing in response to Daniel Martinez's bizarre claim that loyal Democrats should not vote for Barack Obama for president because of various assaults on Obama's character and that the Democratic nomination was "stolen" for him by the Democratic National Committee.

Jujutsu class teaches discipline, tradition

Andrew Yiannakis wants to make UNM the mecca for classical jujutsu. "There's a bunch of martial art here in Albuquerque," he said. "You have Brazilian Jujutsu and variations from other systems. These systems are sport- or competition-oriented. They basically severed their moorings, their roots, and they no longer reflect the original philosophies and traditions from which they came.

The Console Wars

Now that another school year is upon us, hallways are clogged, lines in the SUB are long and everywhere a bicyclist goes, nervous-looking freshmen are freezing in place and causing collisions. In the interest of easing congestion, this latest edition of Console Wars is dedicated to the forthcoming games of the fall - after all, the more freshmen there are playing these games, the less people there will be clogging up campus when spring comes around.

Local T-shirt shop offers outspoken apparel

Travis Parkin said if he'd opened his T-shirt shop in 2002, officials might have strung him up under the Patriot Act. "But now people realize the war was a sham and was based on a lie, and they're starting to - even on network TV, people are outspoken about this," he said, "so we feel it's 'safe' to express ourselves, as well.

UNM chant is ridiculous; Lobos don't bark, they howl

Editor, I just moved here and am becoming familiar with the local teams. I have looked into the Lobos, and I am disgusted with a certain slogan. What is the deal with "Everyone's a Lobo! Woof! Woof! Woof!"? Last I recall, Lobos howl. They don't bark like our pet dogs.
