Provost Abdallah considers position at Georgia Tech

Chaouki Abdallah, the current provost at the University of New Mexico, has recently been selected as a finalist for the position of Vice President of Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Abdallah has held the provost position over the past 7 years, taking brief break to be interim president of UNM. “The Provost is responsible for everything academic on the Main Campus and the branches, and in some ways collaborating with the Health Sciences, especially at the undergraduate level,” Abdallah said. “All the colleges, student services and faculty ultimately go through the provost to the president.”

UNM professor uses grant to study Alzheimer's

A doctor at the University of New Mexico is researching a degenerative memory disease that affects millions with the help of a $150,000 research grant this June during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. Dr. Benjamin Clark is an assistant professor in UNM’s psychology department. He is using a grant from the Alzheimer’s Association to understand how head direction cells — a type of neuron in the hippocampus that facilitates navigation — are affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Profile: Officer Patrick Burk continues long career at UNM

A typical day shift for University of New Mexico Police Department Officer Patrick Burk starts at 6 a.m. On June 18 at 6:34 a.m., his first emergency call of the day crackled over radio dispatch — a near-drowning at Johnson Gym Pool. Red and blue lights flashed on top of a wailing white SUV as Burk hastily travelled east on Lomas Boulevard. Less than four minutes after the call, Burk joined two other UNMPD officers on the scene

Air Force grants nearly $7 million to UNM

Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) granted $6.7 million to University of New Mexico sectors for STEM research, with a focus on the development of spacecraft technologies and commercial applications from the research. Matthew Fetrow, the director of AFRL tech management, said that the money is part of a five year grant to improve community outreach to STEM fields, increase economic and workforce development and connect AFRL technologies with students. The principle UNM educator working with AFRL is electrical and computer engineer professor, Rafael Fierro. He said the lab facility for the research is “populated with robots, computers and 3D printers.”

Movie Review: Rampage sees "The Rock" in a familiar role

Released on April 13th, “Rampage” was one of the most well-advertised films of the year. It was almost impossible to browse the internet without seeing some sort of “Rampage” advertisement. And these advertisements most likely featured Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson flexing in tattered clothing in front of a war-torn, smoke-filled cityscape.

Music Review: Kids See Ghosts pushes hip-hop to new heights

After months of rumors and speculation, the long-awaited collaboration between former rivals Kanye West and Kid Cudi has finally surfaced in the form of a carefully crafted and thoughtfully produced album titled “Kids See Ghosts” (KSG). Similar to previous Kanye produced albums during the month of June, “Daytona” and “Ye,” KSG has a seven-track listing that seemingly encapsulates all of Kanye’s and Cudi’s strengths. Although KSG has a run time of just 23 minutes, the mysterious and at times dream like atmosphere Kanye and Cudi produce helps expand their album into something that feels greater than just a measly 23 minutes of music.

Movie Review: Tag provides decent comedy with all-star cast

I was extremely excited to see the movie “Tag” after I viewed it’s trailer during the previews of almost every other movie I saw in theaters. From the trailer, I could immediately tell that “Tag” was supposed to be hilarious, and I thought that the movie’s extremely unique plotline really strengthened its chance of being a successful comedy.

Track and Field: UNM notches four All-American performances, Kerr turns pro

The University of New Mexico track and field team made the trip to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon to compete in the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month. UNM track and field has made it a habit to send competitors to the championships and have solid showings — and that trend continued as four student-athletes ran their way to All-American performances. Junior runner Josh Kerr was already familiar with competing on the national stage. He won an individual national championship in the men's 1500-meter run last year and was probably viewed as the favorite to defend his crown this time around.

UNM eliminates printing credit, installs new kiosks

Starting Fall 2018, printing pods at the University of New Mexico Main Campus, School of Law and Health Sciences Center will be replaced by WĒPA printing kiosks, bringing with them the end of the student printing credit. UNM Information Technologies, along with University Libraries, Graduate and Professional Student Association and Associated Students of UNM, made the decision to cut and replace the service.

Movie Review: Adrift proves surprisingly emotional

Released on June 1, “Adrift” follows the true story of a couple, Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, who were lost at sea when commissioned to sail a yacht from Tahiti to San Diego in 1983. The movie is based on the book "Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea," written by Oldham as a reflection of her journey and her thoughts on surviving Hurricane Raymond.

Medieval Studies attracts variety of students

The University of New Mexico's Medieval Institute is an interdisciplinary course of study that combines both English and history classes focusing on medieval studies, said Emily Northcutt, a recent UNM graduate. Northcutt was the president of the Medieval Studies Student Organization during the spring semester of 2018. According to Northcutt, the Medieval Institute benefits the entire Albuquerque community, not just students attending UNM. She said this is due to the annual spring lecture series. The spring lecture series brings in people from all over the community.

On April 7, Cardi B released her debut studio album titled “Invasion of Privacy.” No other album or artist in 2018 has had so much to prove. With Cardi B’s fan base growing by the day and her fame being held up by her groundbreaking hit “Bodak Yellow,” her future in the music industry seemed to weigh on the success of “Invasion of Privacy.”

We started at the crack of dawn — 11 a.m. — with one goal in mind, to find the perfect taco. Before we start, let’s introduce ourselves. Danielle Prokop and Shayla Cunico are both New Mexican natives and editors for the Daily Lobo. Shayla hails from Las Cruces, and Danielle was grown in a test tube in Los Alamos. Both have been eating tacos for at least 21 years.

Movie Review: Despite unique plot, Truth or Dare still disappoints

For about a month, every time I clicked on a YouTube video I was first forced to watch a commercial advertising the film “Truth or Dare.” The commercial featured Lucy Hale, well known for her role as Aria in the TV show Pretty Little Liars, screaming at her male friend, daring him to cut his tongue out. The male character holds out his tongue, grips a knife, says something along the lines of “I can’t believe I’m doing this” and then — the screen fades to black.

Jay Rock- “WIN” “Win” featuring Kendrick Lamar feels as though it was seemingly created for TDE’s Championship Tour. Although “Win” is relatively simplistic, the marching band horns which reign over the majority of the track feel uplifting and inspiring. If your workout playlist doesn’t have “Win” next to Kanye’s “Power” how do you even find motivation to do anything? Charlie Puth- ”BOY” Off of Charlie Puth’s sophomore album “Voicenotes” the track “BOY” is an upbeat, playful anthem to guys born in the 90’s who seemingly keep getting treated like a younger boy. Charlie’s lullaby voice stands out like a diamond in an 80’s rough as he effortlessly glides through his hook singing “You won't wake up beside me/ 'Cause I was born in the '90s/ Baby, how dare you treat me just like/ Like a boy.”

Forrest Gump and Nikes: A queer analysis of Frank Ocean

Music’s most elusive act, Christopher Edwin Breaux, also known as Frank Ocean, has taken the world of music to new depths with not only his incomparable lyricism, but the vulnerability that he expresses through them. Throughout his career, Ocean has become more open with expressing his sexuality through his art. In July of 2012, Ocean decided to make his first statement addressing his sexuality through an open letter on his Tumblr page. He explained that his first love was indeed a man and gave a detailed account of his loss of love they experienced.

Pride Title Holders recognized during 2018 parade

This year, four people were recognized as 2018 New Mexico Pride Title Holders. According to the Albuquerque Pride website, recipients must register and win their pageant, as well as engage communities in a year long project to “educate, and bring awareness” to LGBTQ culture and issues, to become a Title Holder. Chris Salas, also known as Topher Daniels, is a University of New Mexico alumnus, and holds the Mr. New Mexico Pride 2018 title.

In early December of last year, I kissed a girl for the first time. It felt, among all the usual things associated with a kiss, as wholly natural as my first kiss with a guy years ago. I had been dimly aware that I was not straight, but attracted to both sexes since my years in Catholic high school — it wasn’t until college that I consciously acknowledged it. By this time, I felt ready to tell my family, and from there, others. I remember thinking Christmas might be a good time.

HIV testing centers around UNM

With youths aged 13 to 24 making up 21 percent of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., according to the CDC, it’s no surprise that many HIV clinics are available to young people . Specifically, at the University of New Mexico, there are three HIV Education and Resource clinics that exist, today. Located on campus grounds, the Student Health and Resource Center, the LGBTQ Resource Center and the the UNM Truman Health Services Center all offer monthly testing.
