An individual reported seeing a man on campus carrying what appeared to be a gun on Tuesday morning. UNMPD officers searched the area, near Logan Hall, and issued the all-clear. Police have not made any arrests in connection with the incident. University spokeswoman Susan McKinsey said the investigation is ongoing.

Former Israeli Defense Forces soldier and grassroots activist Micah Kurz will host a discussion today about grassroots organizations in Jerusalem. The Coalition for Peace and Justice in the Middle East, a UNM student organization, organized Kurz’s lecture, which will take place at the SUB. Kurz said the discussion will focus on his work to map out the many local organizations in Jerusalem.
The Office of the University Secretary is accepting honorary degree nominations. The University awards honorary degrees to those who have made significant contributions to a certain field but don’t have the ultimate degree in that subject area.
Mike Locksley has jokingly likened himself to former Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight, and they’re starting to mirror each other in reputation as well as appearance. To date, Locksley has more legal troubles than wins. The list includes a pending sexual harassment lawsuit and, now, allegations of battery.
Key members of the GPSA voted Saturday to follow the New Mexico Open Meetings Act to the letter. The Graduate and Professional Student Association, meeting as a committee-of-the-whole, voted in support of a constitutional clause that would require members to follow all provisions of the state law that requires legislative bodies to open their meetings to the public.
On top of preparing for the Rio Grande rivalry this weekend, the NMSU community had to deal with a bomb threat and a drive-by shooting. The drive-by shooting on Monday started near the Doña Ana branch of NMSU and moved on campus.
A small fire broke out in the basement laundry room of Hokona Hall late Friday morning, damaging at least one dryer and causing smoke to circulate throughout the building. Dorm residents and staff evacuated the building, and no one was injured, said Kerry Horton, Albuquerque Fire Department battalion commander. “It looks like (the dryer) probably just overheated,” he said.

About a dozen students marched into President David Schmidly’s office on Thursday to deliver a petition calling for an exception to the smoking ban. The petition, which had 415 signatures, requests a lift of the smoking ban outside the dormitory areas for the next two years.
UNM is preparing for an H1N1 outbreak. The Student Health and Counseling Center, Provost’s Office and University Hospital, among others, are working together to combat the virus.
“Sardines in a tin” is not a phrase people want to associate with dorm life. But in August, 90 students moved in to triple-student dorm rooms. Now the Lobo Development Corporation and the Board of Regents are working to provide more on-campus housing for students, said Kim Murphy, UNM planning officer. The Master Plan includes a new residence hall for upperclassmen, which would likely be built on south campus, he said. “This is part of an overall strategy to add about 2,000 new beds to our inventory of on-campus housing,” he said.
The Office of Enrollment Management wants to raise requirements for admission. UNM’s current entrance requirements for freshmen are a 2.25 GPA and completion of 13 college preparatory classes.
Over a dozen student groups organized a demonstration at Smith Plaza Wednesday in an effort to get student signatures in support of the DREAM Act. The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act would grant young, undocumented immigrants the ability to further their education, so long as they have graduated from a U.S.
The University offered community members another opportunity to comment on campus development plans on Monday. The Office of Institutional Support Services held two Master Plan open houses in the SUB — one for faculty, students and staff and one for the surrounding neighbors — to get input on the plan’s framework before the Master Plan is up for approval at the Sept.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Bookstore will host a group of UNM faculty authors for a talk and book signing at 2 p.m.
The UNM Queer Straight Alliance has seen about a 300 percent increase in membership since last semester. Ralph Baylor, a QSA member, said that about 10 people attended meetings last year, but now there are about 50 attendees at each meeting. QSA spokesman Jeffrey Waldo said a member from a San Francisco chapter was impressed when she visited a meeting at UNM.

The University is a step closer to having an external audit, per the UNM Faculty Senate’s request last semester. The UNM Board of Regents Audit Committee met Friday and made a recommendation of how the state auditor should examine the University’s finances. Senate President Doug Fields said the regents should consider the faculty’s mistrust of the administration before making their recommendation. “Why can’t we just ask internally how the Rio Rancho Campus is being funded?
