Federal grant to aid Hispanics

After numerous attempts to apply for the Title V grant, UNM's main campus was awarded $2.8 million to improve services for Hispanic students. "It's a great opportunity for the University. Prof's projects use waste

UNM professor Mohamed El-Genk said it is important to diversify power sources. "We can not afford to exclude any options, because we have a diverse environment and circumstances in which we need different energy," he said. "If I say nuclear can do it and go and ignore the others, it is very stupid, very irresponsible." He is working on a project that will use the waste heat from a nuclear plant, or any other power plant, to heat homes or send it to factories to use, he said.

Finding a cure one step at a time

For Amy Farrar-Baker, running is more than just a way to stay in shape. With every mile she treads over, Farrar-Baker financially assists the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. On Jan. 7, 2007, Farrar-Baker will be in Orlando to run 26.2 miles in the Walt Disney World Marathon. Her participation in the event will ensure that $5,000 goes to benefit the society. "Training for a marathon is a somewhat selfish endeavor," Farrar-Baker said.

Janet Blair, spokeswoman for Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, was not thrilled with the courthouse dÇcor. "When I first walked into this court two years ago, I thought, 'My goodness, this place needs plans and it needs art,'" she said.

Fresh faces get a head start

Incoming freshman Jennifer Mahkee attended the 3rd Annual Freshman Family Day to learn about UNM and find out where her classes are. "It showed what UNM is going to be like this year and just how fun and how exciting it will be," she said. "I know everyone says it's fun and exciting, but I want to see it from my own point of view."

UNM finds West Side home

UNM officials announced at an Aug. 17 news conference that the University will trade $6 million worth of land for 216 acres in Rio Rancho, which will be used for a West Side campus. David Harris, UNM's acting president, and Patrick Lyons, New Mexico commissioner of public lands, have approved the deal.

Black Panther founder teaches party's vision

Though David Hilliard doesn't hold a college degree, he has considered himself a teacher since 1966 when he co-founded the Black Panther Party. Hilliard said he will use his experience with the party to teach two courses on the Panthers at UNM this fall. "It's my history. It's my experience. It's my passion. It's what I like doing," Hilliard said.
