A reader at DailyLobo.com responded to last week’s letter, submitted by Lisa McBride: “List of Greeks’ positives could fill the Parthenon,” about the biased view of Greek life on UNM campus: by Barbara Vidal posted Monday “This is completely disgusting. I know tons of great, awesome, genuine people involved in Greek life who do amazing things for UNM and their respective houses, yet the difference [between] them and you, Lisa McBride, is that fact they are in Greek life because it fits into their lives and it calls to who they are; it is an important part of their lives and will continue to be one.
Editor, It’s nice to know that the government of Norway has decided to counter the horrendous terrorist acts perpetrated upon it with “more democracy” instead of doing what America did, which is the exact opposite. Following 9/11, this country’s leaders passed the Orwellian, unconstitutional PATRIOT Act in October 2001, apparently deciding that restricting the rights of its citizens was the best solution to prevent future terrorist threats.
Editor, I have been at UNM for two years now and I cannot help but realize that some of my fellow students do not appreciate the role of Greek Letter Organizations on our campus.
Editor, A revision of the Pledge of Allegiance: I pledge allegiance to the Segregated States of America, and to the reputation of politicians for which greed and no ethics of restrictions stands, one nation, under financial debt, without a concern for those less fortunate, that is dividing us all.
Editor, An open letter to the young woman riding her bike on Central Avenue in front of UNM on July 18 around 2:30 p.m.: 1.
Editor, In this day and age, when we always hear about athletes’ missteps, I feel it’s important to talk about the positives when they do something right.
Editor, An anti-abortion group opened a pregnancy resource center across the street from the UNM Center for Reproductive Health on July 1, after an ambulance responded to the UNM center for an abortion gone wrong.
The summer is over. It had to happen sometime. And I while I hate to be the bearer of bad news, you do have to come back to class, but in the spirit of keeping you informed, I wanted to take a little time to remind you of the issues UNM faces this year.
Editor, I am writing this letter in response to a letter by Philip Lafreniere. He has written to the Daily Lobo about the Lakewood comic publication.
Editor, It must be comforting to American citizens to know that so many of today’s politicians follow in the Founding Fathers’ footsteps by supporting low or no taxes for the wealthy and corporations and high taxes for the middle class and poor.
Editor, The UNM Center for Reproductive Health provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic health services for New Mexico women, and it does so in a safe and supportive environment. The clinic is staffed by UNM physicians who are nationally recognized medical experts.
Editor, With so many quarters cheering at the top of their lungs for the so-called “Arab Spring,” one has to wonder if the concepts of Islam and Democracy are compatible. The definition of Islam is “Submission to the will of God;” the definition of democracy is “a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them.” Let us examine the question of supreme authority in both systems. In Islam the ultimate authority to legislate laws comes from Allah as revealed in the Quran and the way, or Sunnah, of the Prophet Muhammad.
What would happen if a student and a professor were attracted to each other and had a relationship? It might carry on quietly and happily, or it might be exposed.
Editor, I am writing this letter to protest the printing of the comic strip Lakewood. Other than hardly ever being funny, Lakewood’s style of humor insults the student body.
No one is perfect. The devil is in the details. No good deed goes unpunished. These statements are all cliché, but every one accurately describes Bernalillo County’s Ethics Ordinance.
Editor, I was deeply saddened when I discovered that the Souper Salad near the University went out of business last week. As a student, and now as a staff person, Souper Salad always fed me for a reasonable price.
Editor, With many Muslims involved in rebellion against their leaders, one has to wonder: Is this rebellion permissible according to Islam? This question has largely gone unnoticed in the media coverage of the so-called “Arab Spring.” However, Al-Jazeera and Fox News didn’t teach Islam to the world; the Prophet Muhammad did. The Prophet Muhammad said, “Whoever wishes to advise the ruler, then let him not mention it in public, rather let him take the ruler by his hand.
Editor, You know, everything was fine until Al Gore had to point out the whole climate-change thing, but now New York suddenly has a seven-month-long winter.
Editor, After decades of exile to environmentalism’s legal fringes, the notion that natural systems could have legal rights is receiving serious attention.
