Holding events based on race promotes prejudice

Editor, The letter by Peter Lynch published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday regarding separate ceremonies and events based on race raises a valid question: "Are you doing more harm than good by these actions?" It took many years and great courage to finally end the injustice of segregation based on race.

Allowing guns on campus would make students safer

Editor, The photograph on the front page of the Feb. 15 issue of the Daily Lobo is telling of why American schools are continuously under assault from unstable or otherwise violent individuals. Looking past the gurney with a bloodied victim and the ambulance, readers see several photographers snapping photos that have become today's headlines in local, national and international editions.

GPSA to stay unproductive as long as Garcia is in office

Editor, "It's done by the semester, if you had been listening" was GPSA president Joseph Garcia's response to a legitimate question about staff stipends over the weekend. For those of you who have not had the privilege of attending GPSA meetings throughout the year, this sort of behavior has been the trademark of Garcia, Finance Chairman Isaac Padilla and others.

Data show global warming may save thousands of lives

Editor, While many so-called scientists try to make the unsuspecting public think that global warming is real and a threat to human life, some new data is coming out to the contrary. freerepublic.com reports British scientists as saying global warming could end up saving thousands of lives.

Teaching kids about sex leads to better decisions

Editor, I find Andres Saenz's letter published in Tuesday's Daily Lobo amusing. The attitude he expresses clearly reveals his level of ignorance and bigotry. First of all, he didn't really address Wayne Silva's point at all, which was that it's really OK for children to know about sex - not, as Saenz would have people believe, that children ought to have promiscuous sex when they're ready even at a really young age.

Bush's lies, warmongering taint America's reputation

Editor, In Inuktitut, a language spoken in the Arctic, the Inuit translate lawyer into a man who is lying for you. Since their early contact with Western expansionism, the Inuit have understood that colonialism seeks its justification in a self-assisting mendacity that overflows with embellished lies.

Car-bashing not best way to express school spirit

Editor, This letter is in response to the "Lobolition" to be held March 4 where students can vent their frustrations on a salvage vehicle to benefit the athletic clubs. In a way to show school spirit, students are invited to take a bat and have at it. I personally do not understand the violent and wasteful display.

Not teaching about sex only promotes ignorance

Editor, I must take issue with Andres Saenz's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. I believe it is Saenz who should indeed have his facts checked. First of all, not all sex leads to having children. Many more teenagers would not have children to put up for adoption if they didn't have sex - this much is true.

BA/MD students have own sections, don't steal spots

Editor, This letter is in response to the article published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday on the BA/MD program. The article claims students in the BA/MD program are stealing away spots from other pre-medical students in science classes, specifically biology.

Overpopulation has little to do with climate change

Editor, After reading a letter in response to an article concerning population growth and global warming, I feel I must respond. Firstly, the Chinese government does not take away and kill children from families that have more than one child. The policy has, however, been criticized because some people choose to give away or even perhaps kill female children in the hope that the next one will be male.

Not having a mobile phone isn't a problem for others

Editor, "You're a problem for other people if you don't have a mobile phone," said James Katz, Rutgers University professor, in a recent program aired on National Public Radio. Katz examines the social impact of cell phones. I'm one of those fuddy-duddy college English teacher types who has no cell phone and who rides his ancient and creaking bicycle at snail's pace across the UNM campus in all kinds of weather.

Judging an ethnic center is a prejudiced act in itself

Editor, This letter is in response to Peter Lynch's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. Lynch's "humble opinion" is terribly misinformed. He suggests that the ethnic requirements of El Centro de la Raza are equivalent to those of the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazi party.

U.S. behavior contradictory in dealing with Iran, Israel

Editor, Santhosh Chandrashekar's column "West needs new plan to calm Iran," published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday, is illuminating. Today at 7:30 p.m., there will be a talk titled "The Folly of Attacking Iran" at the UNM Conference Center, 1634 University Blvd.

Moral opinions should not dictate teaching of sex ed.

Editor, In his letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday, Andres Saenz argues with a previous letter writer decrying the widely-known failures of abstinence-only education but seeks to only further establish what is already obvious. Saenz's opposition to comprehensive sex education is not based on a practical evaluation of the consequences of keeping children presumably ignorant about sex but, rather, a didactic insistence on the superiority of his own religious convictions.

Social, educational groups shouldn't focus on ethnicity

Editor, I have some concerns regarding the Raza Graduation ceremony. In my humble opinion, any group that has specific ethnic requirements is no better than the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis. Such groups, instead of bringing people together, segregate and isolate them.

Children should be taught the consequences of sex

Editor, I want to respond to Wayne Silva's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday. He states, "There's no point in trying to shield our children from sex." I truly beg to differ. I strongly believe that children should be taught, during puberty, that they should not have sex unless they are ready for a life-long commitment to their spouse, and only if they are ready for the great responsibility of raising, educating and providing for their children.

Column: West needs new plan to calm Iran

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could not have asked for a better occasion. Speaking at the 29th anniversary celebrations of the country's Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad, one of the student leaders who participated in the seizure of the American embassy, reiterated his now familiar position on Iran's right to pursue a nuclear program.

U.S. chooses free market over adequate health care

Editor, Of those who live in the U.S., 18 percent are without health insurance. But I'm willing to bet that the number of legislators who have health insurance probably averages out to about, say, 100 percent? Just a guess. Sure, you can say our economy couldn't afford it, or that it would universally bring down the quality of health care for everybody.
