Letter:Media misleads public in the name of Bush

Editor, We often hear the major news media tout President Bush's fiscal acumen. How can taking our country from a budget surplus to the largest budget deficit in history by the end of his first term vindicate President Bush's stewardship of our economy and budget? Two major signs of a healthy America are a strong economy and low unemployment rate.

Column: A dumbing down of society

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist I noticed that every channel on television keeps a little trademark in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. What could the point of this be, except to insult the intelligence of viewers? Are we really going to forget what station we are watching? Have our short-term memories become split-second memories? Are humans getting less intelligent, or is Alzheimer's hitting all-time epic proportions, striking young and old? The more I thought about this, the more I realized this might be exactly the point of the trademark - it merely represents the new low mark in a series of societal responses to a general dumbing-down of the population.

Letter:Everyone must give up violence to create peace

Editor, In the aftermath of the bombs that exploded in the London subway, many people are saying that Muslims must give up violence as a means of dealing with their differences with other people. The truth is, all of us must give up violence as a means of dealing with our differences with other people.

Column: London has quiet strength

by Matthew Paul Bailey Daily Lobo guest columnist On July 7, 2005, the city I was born in felt the firsthand effects of the war on terrorism. Four bombs exploded at various locations in London. These places were not full of the rich and famous, nor politicians or tourists.

Letter: Terrorist bombings cause emotional response

Editor, I sat down for my morning tea on Thursday and read: "40 killed and three hundred injured in London blasts." Over the course of the next few days, we heard of more people dead and worse. It's always worse for those left behind. Some, who just missed the bus or rail, will feel relieved and guilty for being alive.

Letter: London attacks don't compare to Iraq violence

Editor, How hollow must the sound of President Bush's and Prime Minister Blair's empty words ring, even in the trustful ears of the staunchest patriot in the face of Madrid last year and now London. We should not forget that all terrorists are human. There are specific reasons behind their actions, which must be understood and acknowledged.

Column: Environment facts fudged

by Maceo Carrillo-Martinez Daily Lobo columnist According to scholars who study the Mayan calendar, we are in a period in which communication is vitally important to our survival. With wars draining the land of wealth and history and the heated debates around global warming, our ability to communicate is more important than ever.

Editorial: Jailing of reporter signals danger to press' freedom

A federal judge ordered Wednesday that a reporter for the New York Times be imprisoned for contempt of court for refusing to reveal sources in front of a grand jury. The federal grand jury is investigating whether a Bush administration official leaked a CIA agent's identity, which is a federal crime.

Letter: The side of Bush we have yet to hear

Editor, Here is an excerpt from the speech Bush wanted to give last week: "My fellow Americans, as you know, I rarely stoop to speak directly to the unwashed masses, but tonight I am putting my profound contempt for humanity aside to feed you more worthless drivel that I'm sure you will eat up like so many Big Macs.

Letter: Ch†vez supporters blind to mayor's lack of action

Editor, I am writing about the article "Students aid candidates," printed in last week's Daily Lobo. As a former president of the UNM College Democrats, I thought I would share some thoughts on the current mayor's race. In the article, UNM student Brian Eagan made it clear he is an enthusiastic supporter of Mayor Martin Ch†vez, but I couldn't find any reasons.

Letter: UNM needs to clean up more than just buildings

Editor, Regarding the recent article "Regents give OK to bond issue," I would say it is about time that somebody woke up and realized the campus needs improvements and renovations. Whether students should pay for part of the bonds is open for debate. It does seem as though students are taking an excessive hit considering the recent tuition hike they will have to pay for.

Letter: Terrorist attacks tripled last year thanks to war

Editor, The most senior officer in the United States armed forces, Gen. Richard Myers, said Iraqi insurgents have lost none of their capacity to stage attacks. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said there were 50 to 60 attacks a day - the same level as one year ago.

Letter: Students blinded by their political opinions

Editor, I recently made the agonizing decision to abandon a budding career as an academic in favor of practicing law. The decision was indeed difficult because in more than 30 years of earning wages, I have never had a job as challenging, fulfilling and downright fun as helping college students educate themselves.

Column: Waking up to Welfare

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist For the majority of my life, I assumed that people on Medicaid and other social welfare programs just lay around all day making up fictitious children and eating taxpayer bonbons. But since life is what happens while you're making other plans, I ended up pregnant.

Editorial: Court ruling threatens student publications

What we're about to write may soon be censored by University administrators. Thanks to a recent ruling in the Hosty v. Carter case by the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, censorship of college media is a new danger to freedom of the press and freedom of speech.
