COLUMN: EPA charade upsets PETA

by Ingrid Newkirk Knight Ridder-Tribune In mid-January, a dog belonging to Christine Todd Whitman, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, died of cancer. Only days before she died, Whitman's dog, named Coors, had become the "poster dog" of an advertisement prominently displayed at the Metro subway stop nearest to the EPA's headquarters in Washington.

COLUMN: Obey leaders you've elected

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist Maybe I think going to war with Iraq is a swell idea. I might even think the "Bomb Saddam" signs of the counter-protesters last Saturday were terribly clever. Maybe I think we should bomb Kuwait, too. After all, we already have enough troops there to take over the country.

COLUMN: Michigan admissions policy needs scrutiny

by Jon Schwartz Michigan Daily (U. Michigan) 01/21/2003 (U-WIRE) ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the developments of the past week, and those sure to come in the next few months, the admissions system at the University of Michigan is going to get the time in the spotlight that it sorely needs.

LETTER: Hussein threat to all Americans now

Editor, For all of those who chose to gather in protest of any military action against Saddam, I applaud your expression, but would like you to consider just a few points. First, there is a reason he is called the "butcher of Baghdad," showing no hesitation at all to killing and maiming his own people, and making free use of chemical and biological weapons on innocent people.

COLUMN: Race key in school setting

On Jan. 16, 2003, the Bush Administration announced that it would submit a brief in the Grutter v. Bollinger case against affirmative action. This case was granted a review by the U.S. Supreme Court last December and will be reviewed together with Michigan's undergraduate counterpart, Gratz v.

LETTER: Impatient drivers a menace to safety

Editor, I am writing this letter because I have finally figured out what is wrong with many of the drivers on campus: no one cares. They don't care if they go the wrong way down a one-way street or parking lot (i.e. the streets by the old Sigma Chi house and the CRF parking lot near UNM Hospital.

LETTER: New rash of protests step in right direction

Editor, It was heartening to read about all of the recent anti-war protests taking place throughout the country, including Albuquerque. I sincerely hope the protests continue in every city, town and village in the country until our president realizes war is not necessary.

LETTER: Lobo more juvenile each passing year

Editor, Over the past two years, I've noticed a steady decline in the quality of the Daily Lobo (a.k.a. the "Low Blow"). In particular, I was offended by a sexually explicit photo found as part of an early-December issue article's content. The inclusion of this photo was unnecessary, juvenile sensationalism.

COLUMN: Police useless in Roosevelt

by Eric Howerton Daily Lobo Columnist Hello and welcome to your Frisbee Golf Tutorial. As one of the only Frisbee golf courses located in the metropolis of Albuquerque, the Roosevelt Park Resort offers some of the finest terrain imaginable. With more than seven different courses to choose from, Roosevelt Park Resort, on Coal Avenue, has certainly blossomed since the secure and family oriented setting it was not 10 years ago.

COLUMN: Copyrights getting stranger

by Zack Denfeld Daily Orange (Syracuse U.) 01/17/2003 (U-WIRE) SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- "My printer roll at 600 dpi/ My scanner scans in the blink of an eye." Sound ridiculous? Maybe not. The Sept. 9 issue of Ad Age Magazine reports that "Island Def Jam Music Group is negotiating a deal with Hewlett-Packard to mention HP products in hip-hop lyrics.

EDITORIAL: Great loss recalled during hard times

New Year's Eve is my friend's birthday and it was the night Roberto Clemente disappeared forever. I found myself thinking about the link after the fact. Clemente, who is my favorite baseball player and the first Latino major leaguer to put Hispanics on the map in the MLB, was Puerto Rican.

LETTER: 'Two Towers' movie pro-war hype strange

Editor, Recently, there has been some strange construction of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic trilogy The Lord of the Rings as being racist and pro-war propaganda, with some trying to link the title of the second part of the story The Two Towers as being a comparison to the twin towers and the fact that the Orcs, the animal-like villains in service of the evil Sauron are dark complected, therefore the story is racist.

COLUMN: U.S. terror war still confusing

by Lucas Schaefer The Chronicle (Duke U.) 01/09/2003 (U-WIRE) DURHAM, N.C. -- "I don't know Tupac," I'd say. "Well, have you met him?" "Nope. I think he might be dead." "Tupac? No way. You really don't know him?" When I first came to study for the fall semester on the predominantly Muslim coast of Kenya, I had a feeling the Kenyans I'd encounter, particularly the teenagers and ones my age, would have lots of questions about America, just as I had lots about Kenya.

COLUMN: Lawful right to bear arms

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist Last week, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled on the legitimacy of California's semiautomatic assault weapons ban. It upheld the ban, which was not a surprise. But Judge Stephen Reinhardt, well known to be one of the nation's most proactive liberal judges, also produced for the case a 70-page dissertation on the Second Amendment.
