Column: Rights exercised in excess

Napoleon Bonaparte was, arguably, the bravest Civil War general in the history of the United States. He defeated Gen. George Washington Carver aboard a sinking oil ship, spontaneously gave birth to a head of iceberg lettuce and, most notably, invented time with nothing more than toothpicks and chewing gum.

Column: Third parties could be new way to go next election year

by Jeff Postelwait Daily O'Collegian (Oklahoma State U.) U-Wire So the big show is over. Actually, the show before the big show is over. We have a new, or at least rearranged, Congress. Who's going to try to be next in the White House has yet to be determined, though it won't be long before you'll be sick of hearing about it.

Column: Political parties more divided than ever now

by Annette Henke Idaho Argonaut (U. Idaho) U-Wire After reading one of my recent articles, someone I knew in high school with whom I hadn't chatted in a while asked me when I'd become a raging, raving liberal. Well, the "raving" part is easy enough to figure out: I get paid to rant and rave about the issues that matter to me, and hopefully, to the majority of my readership.

COLUMN: Internet act dispute dangerous

by Alex Roosenburg Cavalier Daily (U. Virginia) U-Wire The Supreme Court announced last Tuesday that it will intervene in a dispute concerning free speech on the Internet. The decision, which will come early next year, will affect online choices and Internet coverage available to millions of Americans who depend on public libraries for their Internet access.

COLUMN: WTO rioters inconsiderate

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist Last week an informal meeting of the World Trade Organization in Sydney, Australia, concluded with a tentative agreement by trade ministers. In a continuation of talks that began in Seattle in 1999, they are working toward an international agreement on reducing the cost of life-saving medicines in poorer countries.

LETTER: Daily Lobo prints one-sided opinions

Editor, Thank you Scott Darnell, Louis Metzger and Wayne Schlingman. Criticism like yours of the Daily Lobo's editorial decisions is long overdue. As an instructor here at UNM for the past two years, I too have noticed a consistent pattern of thought in the pages of the editorial section.

LETTER: English 101 students also display generosity

Editor, All too seldom does one hear instructors "bragging on" their students. As a postscript to Angela Heisel's article, "UNM displays holiday generosity," in Monday's Daily Lobo, I would like to air how my English 101 students are finding "the satisfaction of knowing several readings and some class discussion of the "homelessness problem," one of my students declared her case of writer's block when the time came for drafting the semester's third essay.

COLUMN: Trust self for good deeds

by Rachel Richmond University Daily (Texas Tech U.) U-Wire My roommate Victoria told me this story about this incident at her place of employment. This little old lady left Vic's work and was approached in the parking lot by a toothless woman. The woman asked the little old lady for a lift and the little old lady agreed, thinking it would be a nice gesture.

COLUMN: Religion gets kicked in the butt

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist In trying to think of a title for a short story I'm working on, I did an Internet search for the word "messiah." This produced some interesting results. In addition to the Catholic Encyclopedia entry - the most useful of my results - and sites for a number of churches, the search came up with two sites that seemed a bit, well, out of place.

LETTERS: Daily Lobo's policies biased, unprofessional

Editor, I couldn't agree more with the letter from Scott Darnell, Louis Metzger IV and Wayne Schlingman. If nothing else, you have proved their point by adding a headline that completely misses the point! It's not just that the published columns present only one point of view - it's that your editorial practices and policies as a whole are biased and unprofessional.

COLUMN: Political campaigns no longer about viewpoint

by Sam Stein The Dartmouth (Dartmouth College) U-Wire It was 1994, and I was sitting in the second tier of my high school's auditorium. I remember it distinctly because the whole event was so comical. In front of me were the three candidates running for eighth grade class president, each candidate unique in their own regard.

LETTER: Loss of Vigil's food cart disappointing

Editor, It's sad to hear that an "overzealous" health inspector had the power to shut down the only decent food source on the UNM campus. Due to the closure of the SUB, there are limited places to find a decent meal on campus. As a hungry student, I often depended on the food that "Boss Man" had to offer.

LETTER: Daily Lobo's columns all have same ideology

Editor, As avid readers of the Daily Lobo, we feel that it is important to follow current issues. We appreciate having a student publication on campus, but wish to express valid complaints about its editorial practices this semester. Our first grievance deals with unequal representation of ideology within the opinion pages.

LETTER: Lobo misinterprets

Editor, It is unfortunate that a report I made to the Board of Regents Student Academic Affairs Committee about employees who want to retire from UNM was misconstrued by student reporter Ryan Floersheim in the Wednesday, Nov. 6, Lobo article "Program's accreditation makes committee agenda" to suggest I meant all employees of "retirement age.

by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President Duff Lill ASUNM Lobby Director Ed Mazel ASUNM Assistant Lobby Director Do you want year-round tax-free textbooks, no tuition increases, to maintain the lottery scholarship and more opportunities for internships in the governor's office? Well, ASUNM is here for you.

COLUMN: Alcohol not worth consequences

by Joseph Boehler Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) U-Wire I've been doing a great deal of thinking since coming to Rutgers, and I've really been focusing on the issue of alcohol. Quite frankly, I can never see why so many first-year students and other college students drink.

COLUMN: Ideas for future president

Dear future president of UNM, Salutations. Although you have yet to be hired, I'd like to be the first to welcome you to the UNM. As with all universities, UNM is a community marked by culture and diversity. It is also a community in dire need of your help.
