COLUMN: Alcohol not worth consequences
November 18by Joseph Boehler Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) U-Wire I've been doing a great deal of thinking since coming to Rutgers, and I've really been focusing on the issue of alcohol. Quite frankly, I can never see why so many first-year students and other college students drink.
COLUMN: Ideas for future president
Eric Howerton | November 15Dear future president of UNM, Salutations. Although you have yet to be hired, I'd like to be the first to welcome you to the UNM. As with all universities, UNM is a community marked by culture and diversity. It is also a community in dire need of your help.
LETTER: Long-term ecstacy effects not known
November 15Editor, On Tuesday, Nov. 5, you had a guest columnist, Kevin Killough, present an article titled "Exaggerated Ecstasy Hype Precarious." Mr. Killough used a mortality figure from four years ago. The use of Ecstasy has gone up exponentially since then; the newest figures are much more alarming.
LETTER: GOP control does not mean end of the world
November 15by Shankar Gupta Washington Square News (New York U.) U-Wire If you listen to some of the liberal press, the results of the midterm election on Nov. 5 spelled the end of this country. Various columnists, pundits and talking heads predicted apocalypse following the national Republican Party takeover.
COLUMN: Book fair to showcase UNM faculty writers
November 14by Teresa Marquez and Carolyn Mountain UNM Library Columnists The holiday season is almost upon us and for these festive days, the Center For Southwest Research and DILARES in the UNM General Library will sponsor the first-ever Encantos: A Book Fair and Guatemala Market this Saturday, Nov.
LETTER: Bush memorial visit simply hypocritical
November 14Editor, I hope the irony of Bush's visit to the Vietnam War Memorial on Monday was not lost. This from a man whose family connections let him enlist in the Texas Air National Guard ahead of an 18-month waiting list of those hoping to avoid the war. This from a man who then honored this commitment by simply not showing up, like it was a summer job, and was never prosecuted for being AWOL.
COLUMN: U.S. power threat to world
November 14by Sinan Al-Saffar Daily Lobo Guest Columnist Mr. Lawrence Lindsey, President Bush's chief economic adviser, discussed the coming war with Iraq and truthfully stated in a recent Washington Times interview that: "The key issue is oil, and a regime change in Iraq would facilitate an increase in world oil, which would tend to lower oil prices.
COLUMN: Society too sensitive today
November 14by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist At first glance it might not appear that I and Terrel Owens, the premier wide receiver for San Francisco, have much in common besides a connection - as fan and player - with the 49ers. But watching any number of sports pundits chastising him for pulling a pen out of his sock after a touchdown and autographing and handing the ball to a fan, I realized that I also have been constantly on the receiving end of such hyper-seriousness and heard that inevitable phrase of the stuffed-shirts: inappropriate behavior.
COLUMN: Iraqi war seemingly inevitable
November 13by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist The international community has joined behind a new U.N. resolution that will force Iraq to open itself to weapons inspections or face the consequences. Many who hope to see democratic reforms in Iraq and other Arab nations are concerned that a U.
COLUMN: Hip-Hop loses admirable icon
November 13by Stanley Crouch Knight Ridder-Tribune If the murder of Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, is connected at all to the world of hip-hop, then things have gotten even worse than they already were. It is extremely bad news if hip-hop is at the point where even apparently good guys like Mizell - family men who speak out against thuggish behavior and drugs - can find themselves targets for goons in ski masks.
LETTER: Attack of chairman unfair, lacks clarity
November 13Editor, Like any former journalist perusing the pages of a student newspaper in search of that tingling sensation I get after reading good leads and headlines, I opt not to comment. My standard practice is to read the editorials and commentaries, laugh at the proverbial fanning of the flames and move on.
LETTER: Step taken to ensure hasty SUB opening
November 13Editor, UNM has experienced unacceptable delays in the Student Union Building renovation project. In response, we have imposed delay damages and taken other unprecedented action to get this project completed. We are committed to a first-class building for students and will not cut corners in the process.
LETTER: Column assassinates language
November 13Editor, Three cheers for Eric Howerton! I salute him for the language expert and razor-sharp satirist that he is. In his Nov. 1 column, his modest proposal for restoring "appreciation" to the language of Shakespeare, Eliot, and Seinfeld neatly skewers many myths about language perpetrated by so-called "language mavens" and associated blowhards.
LETTER: C&J cannot seem to step up and do its job
November 12Editor, Thank you so much for enlightening the UNM student body about the inadequacy of the journalism program. Supposedly, the accreditation team is not happy with the combined Communication & Journalism Department. It also seems that the board of C & J at UNM can't seem to step up to the plate and do the job that needs to be done to fix this accreditation problem.
LETTER: Not hard to check facts
November 12Editor, In yesterday's column, "Good guys never come out winners," on page 6, by Mike Still, he says, "Few Democrats spoke loudly against an invasion of Iraq and in the end, the Senate vote allowing for possible military action was 99-1. The lone dissenter was Sen.
