LETTER: Local pub should be ashamed of behavior

Editor, I was shocked at the article about a local bar denying a pregnant woman entry. This action was outrageous and what's even worse is that they rewarded this behavior. Refusing to serve a pregnant woman is one thing but this is going too far. What's next, requiring all women of childbearing age to submit to a pregnancy test before entering any establishment that serves alcohol? My full support goes to Heather and shame on Brewster's Pub.

COLUMN: Proper English going extinct

English is the Frankenstein of languages - a little from here, a little from there; a mandible from Latin, some skin from Old Norse, and brought to life by some energy from French. English, like America, is a melting pot language, a hodgepodge of idioms, a smorgasbord without a sneeze guard, contaminated by all those who partake in the feast.

LETTER: Anti-war actions begin with voting

Editor, As the majority of our elected officials continue to sell us out by ignoring the growing majority opposed to imperialist military aggression, the upcoming election represents a critical day in U.S. history. Given the lack of courage by most U.S.

COLUMN: Coach Long deserves praise

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist Throughout my career I have been openly critical of the major college sports, football and basketball, so it was with some irony that I found myself standing on the sidelines of Saturday's homecoming game, wearing a UNM football windbreaker and looking, except for the hair, like a shabbier version of a Lobo booster.

COLUMN: Debate won't solve conflicts

By James A. Haught Knight-Riddder Last week, the Bill Moyers public television agency flew me to New York to join a circle of theologians and scholars discussing a baffling question: Why is religion - which universally teaches love, forgiveness and brotherhood - entwined in so much murder and hate around the world? As cameras rolled, our eight-member group debated for two hours, but found few answers.

LETTER: Action encouraged by students, not reaction

Editor, First of all, I would like to commend the Student Organization for Latin American Studies (S.O.L.A.S.) for presenting a point of view other than what has been presented to us by the mainstream media. I believe that it is important to have access to different perspectives and that was achieved Monday evening.

LETTER: Magnetic trains in N.M. not realistic

Editor, I enjoyed reading Ryan Floersheim's story about Aviva Brecher's recent presentation on Magnetic railways. Getting back to planet Earth however, New Mexico has a snowball's chance in Hell of getting a Maglev train. As a matter of fact, New Mexico, thanks to the Republicans in the House of Representatives, may soon lose The Southwest Chief, the railroad that connects Chicago to Los Angeles via downtown Albuquerque.

COLUMN: Voters need more education

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist One of the most often lamented facts of American society is the ever-declining state of our primary education systems. Asian and European students often score much higher in standardized tests on math and science than American students do.

LETTER: Award for local bar

Editor, In response to "Brewster's Pub awarded for refusing pregnant woman entry (Oct. 28)." Bravo! Trouble is, these actions don't go far enough. We need to place all pregnant women under house arrest. Lord knows where they might go or what trouble they might get into if we even let them out the front door! Clearly they are not to be trusted.

LETTER: Bill would increase TV election reports

by Michelle Singer Daily Bruin U-Wire The voters blame the politicians. The politicians blame the voters. Nobody takes responsibility for the uninformed, uninterested population. And nobody blames what may be the largest source of voter ignorance yet: the media.
