LETTER: Iraq war not logical
October 17Editor, President Bush has no idea what he is getting us into with his paranoiac fixation on Saddam Hussein. The entire Arab world isn't going to sit back and watch as we destroy Iraq. Visualize this scenario: Iraq launches missiles at Israel, who responds in kind.
EDITORIAL: American public sets tone for most media
October 16It's undeniable - media coverage tends to be negative. The argument always comes around to the same old journalistic fallbacks, such as "If it bleeds, it leads," or some other such nonsense. Also, the media are the cause of all skewed perceptions. The media are to blame for sensationalism of the most mundane and inane topics, but also are guilty for not covering overlooked stories such as missing children and domestic violence.
COLUMN: Some Web sources invalid
October 16by E.R. Shipp Knight Ridder-Tribune Just when black women - from rapper Mary J. Blige to tennis champ Serena Williams to some women twice their age - felt comfortable going blonde came word that blondness is facing extinction. Naturally occurring blondness, that is.
COLUMN: Iraq war will make U.S. an empire
October 16by Liam Scheff Daily Forty-Niner U-Wire Today is a historic day. Congress is in a lopsided debate regarding whether to grant President Bush the sole right and power to wage a war, in the name of all of us, all of the citizens of this country, on the people, not the government of Iraq, one of the richest oil-nations in the world.
COLUMN: Video games blamed for sniper
October 16Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist The Washington, D.C.-area sniper struck again on Monday, bringing the death toll of the attacks to nine. Despite the army of police and federal agents searching the area with a fine-tooth comb, there seems to be little progress in cracking the case.
LETTER: Business school's new exit test hurts students
October 16Editor, I am writing in response to a bombshell that the administration at the Anderson Schools of Management released to the December graduates last week. We were all notified that in order to graduate we must pass an exit test that will be administered to us in November.
COLUMN: Media coverage affected by corporate investments
October 15by Nimish Desai Daily Texan U-Wire The mainstream news media in the United States have been the object of many accusations of bias. Many people, citing what they see as the news media's acquiescent to supportive stance on pressing social issues such as abortion, claim that the media have moved to the left.
COLUMN: Hate crimes continue to haunt U.S.
October 15by Heather M. Ross Knight Ridder-Tribune Four years ago I stood in a crowd of people listening to a woman talk about her gay son. She loved him and hoped that no hate-filled, ignorant person would ever hurt him. This was a crowd of people, gay and straight, that had gathered together on a cool October night in Toronto.
COLUMN: Columbus not an Italian hero
October 15by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist Last weekend I took a nontraditional fall break. I went to Denver for the Transform Columbus Day protest. The mainstream media coverage on such events generally stinks. For example, on this particular protest, the Denver Post headline reads, "Columbus Day fails to boil, Parades, protests equal lots of noise, rhetoric, but violence is absent," and the article proceeds as if the only issue worth covering is whether the black bloc broke any windows.
LETTER: Hitler comparisons to Bush hit the mark
October 15Editor, German politician Herta DÑubler-Gmelin hit the nail on the head when she compared Bush's warfare policies to tactics used by Nazi Germany's Adolf Hitler. Spokesman Ari Fleischer finds the comparison "outrageous and unconceivable." I understand his outrage.
COLUMN: Student elections creeping up
October 14by Heather R. Gabel ASUNM Vice President The semester is half over and I hope that everyone has been enjoying the semester to this point. The Associated Students of UNM president and I have been trying to keep you up to date with what ASUNM is all about and what we are currently working on.
COLUMN: Saudi Arabia backs disparity, terrorism
October 14by Mike Still Daily Collegian U-Wire We were quite young during Operation Desert Storm. Most undergraduates at Penn State were between first and fifth grade during our first major foray into Iraq, and it all seemed pretty simple at the time. As a fourth grader, I remember looking at pictures of Saddam and thinking to myself, "That jerk!" Asked to name the three worst people in history, I would likely have said Adolf Hitler, the Emperor from the "Star Wars" trilogy and Saddam Hussein.
COLUMN: Belafonte's slave remark about Powell lacks guts
October 14by Kevin McAbee Technician U-Wire One of the most accomplished men in America was attacked with racist comments on Tuesday. In an effort to taint the character and achievements of Secretary of State Colin Powell, a prominent figure compared Powell to a slave who solely aims to please his master.
COLUMN: Smoking ban akin to prohibition
October 9by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist On Monday, City Councilor Michael Cadigan introduced a vast new anti-smoking proposal for the city of Albuquerque. It would completely ban smoking in restaurants and bars, in addition to a number of other specific bans.
LETTER: No smoking legislation aids all citizens' health
October 9Editor, I am hopeful that the Albuquerque City Council will impose a ban on smoking in all public places and not leave any loopholes. Many people, myself included, are allergic to smoke and many current "no smoking" areas still contain enough second-hand smoke to force us to leave in the middle of a transaction or meal.
