COLUMN: High drug costs leave human lives out of plan

by Mari Armstrong-Hough U-Wire Drugs are expensive. Developing countries need drugs not only to address raging HIV/AIDS epidemics, but also to fight epidemics of malaria, tuberculosis, and various childhood diseases. But, forced by international intellectual property rights agreements to allow major commercial pharmaceutical corporations exclusive production rights, the cost of those drugs can make them unavailable.

LETTER: UNM Childcare worth the wait, mother says

Editor, After reading the Sept. 18 letter to the editor regarding UNM daycare leaving a child hungry, I have to respond. I personally don't feel UNM Childcare would allow a child to go hungry. I speak from experience as my daughter is also at UNM daycare and I feel very lucky to have her there.

COLUMN: Iraq war rhetoric intolerable

by Justin Peters U-Wire I used to get violent migraines as a kid. Without warning, my eyes would go blurry, and every word, every sound that I heard became a shovel beating against my skull. Medicine didn't help, so all I could do was shut myself in a totally dark room, grit my teeth, and wait for the world to return to normal.

COLUMN: U.S. behind in stem-cell study

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist This past Sunday, California Gov. Gray Davis signed a law specifically allowing embryonic stem-cell research in the state. He is being vehemently opposed in this decision by the Bush administration and the Roman Catholic Church.

COLUMN: Party system devoid of meaning

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist Walking across campus last week, I came upon an amusing series of chalkings. The Democrats had chalked for some rally they were doing that day. Some Republicans decided to add their own two cents - or two letters, like tacking "ir-" to the beginning of every "responsibility" they found.

LETTER: Sorority members' behavior alarming

Editor, What exactly is the purpose of sororities? Do they represent the University and the student body in a respected manner as I have previously thought them to? According to Alpha Chi Omega's vision statement, its members are encouraged to "achieve the highest moral, cultural and intellectual level in the art of daily living.

COLUMN: Female athletics remain subject to old stereotypes

by Patricia Ireland Knight Ridder-Tribune Despite Title IX, passed 30 years ago, women and girls in sports still find themselves subject to a highly contradictory social message: be athletic, but be feminine, too. Women must excel not only at their sport but also at their conventional social role.

Cancer's causes unexplored

by Barbara Brenner Knight Ridder-Tribune People living with breast cancer wait for big news from the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Era of Hope Meeting with bated breath, eager for the breakthrough that could prolong lives. Having been a peer reviewer for the breast cancer research program of the Department of Defense, I have come to view these gatherings less as venues for significant scientific revelations and more as wasted opportunities to focus on what, beyond our genes, may be causing breast cancer.

COLUMN: Technology sapping our world

Children aren't the only ones who stay awake at night clutching their blankets, insomniac from fear of the boogieman. I too have a monster under my bed: technology. With progress moving forward without any end in sight, it's imperative to see how truly scary it is and question its worth.

COLUMN: Undesirable celebrities should be flown to sun

by Kevin McAbee U-Wire America needs some change. Therefore, I have decided to ask the government to allow me to send a manned spaceship directly into the sun. It will be a joint effort with the Department of Homeland Defense to rid the United States of all "undesirables.

COLUMN: Community service a fresh ASUNM staple

by Jennifer Onuska Daily Lobo Columnist A trend is developing throughout our country at other college campuses in which community service has become a part of their student governments. This addition to other student governments has been highly accepted and successful.

LETTER: Youth should learn from consequences

First let me say that I do not necessarily believe that abstinence education will really help matters any, unless handled in a certain way, but I disagree with what Elizabeth Gross has to say.

COLUMN: Use vote to voice your dissent

A deficiency of intelligent self-expression exists amongst the e-generation. Problematic with our complacent consumer culture is that we have lost the skills of dialogue and of open rebellion and contempt for the establishment and for the status quo. Where have the Allen Ginsbergs gone? The John Lennons? The Janis Joplins, the Eldridge Cleavers and all the other contrarians of the formative 1960s?
