COLUMN: Congress can take steps to stop smog

by Angela Ledford Knight Ridder-Tribune The rash of ozone alerts in major cities this summer drives home the realization that air pollution directly affects enormous numbers of us every day, especially children and the elderly. Typically, on code red days we're told to drive less, not use gasoline-powered lawnmowers, and wait it out indoors.

COLUMN: More to history than empires

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist Picture this: A narrow pass through the mountains. Inside, four to five thousand Hellenes, armed with heavy, unwieldy bronze shields and eight foot spears. Outside, tens upon tens of thousands of soldiers from all corners of the Persian empire, with a wide assortment of light-weight armaments and enough arrows to cause a solar eclipse.

LETTER: Junk food not welcome

Editor, Taking a stroll out on the Health Sciences Center Plaza last Thursday afternoon, one could see a multitude of health sciences representatives promoting their departments with free literature and health-related information. Adjacent to them you would have seen handouts of a completely different kind - plate upon plate of free, processed food given out as part of Welcome Back Days on North Campus.

COLUMN: Agencies offer opportunities

by Jennifer Onuska Daily Lobo Columnist At this point in the year everyone has found their classes, everyone has bought their books and everyone has eaten at the Frontier several times to service the craving that they missed over the summer. With all of that said and done, we now have 15 weeks to go in the semester and many decisions to make on how we want to spend our time.

LETTER: Present society snubs weak, defends strong

Editor, Morality (the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct, according to American Heritage Dictionary) cannot be legislated. However, citizens and legislators of fortitude could stop immoral acts by calling it so. Buddha, in his younger days, saw pain and suffering outside his palace walls.

LETTER: Editor's comments are inaccurate, uninformed

Angela Williams sounds as though she has not been keeping up with current events or simply has a hidden agenda. First of all, our "plunging stock market" has actually been on the rise in the last two weeks and more so in recent days. I'll admit the pending baseball strike is troubling, but they are not yet striking as Williams infers, only a date has been set, and a new proposal looks like it may settle the issue before a work stoppage occurs.

COLUMN: Not all opinions rosy, Americans oblivious

Everyone makes fun of Sally Field for her joyous exclamation at the Academy Awards - "You like me! You really like me!" - but she was only demonstrating how American she is. Americans tend to have a high opinion of their country - American exceptionalism is the scholarly term - and are taken aback when confronted with beliefs to the contrary.

Column: Regents far too money-minded

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist Bill Gordon is gone now, off to be provost and no doubt soon president of Wake Forest University. He was probably the best we could do: unlike most he was a long-time faculty member at UNM and appeared to have some genuine concern for students and faculty (though most of the innovations in undergraduate teaching should be credited to University College dean Peter White.

Editorial: Uncertain times call for student response

It's been a very disturbing year. Perhaps every year is eerie and strange in its way, but the events from the end of 2001 straight through 2002 have affected this country's mindset in new and troubling ways. The obvious, of course, is Sept. 11, and as the anniversary looms ever closer the memory of that day rings louder and louder.

Column: Attacking Iraq will only fuel anger toward U.S.

by Gordon S. Clark Knight Ridder-Tribune The hard-line hawks in the Bush administration are pushing for a "regime change" in Iraq and preparing for war. But the consequences of a U.S. attack on Iraq range from troubling to potentially catastrophic.

Letter: Purpose of education is to expose diversity

I am an over 50-year old grad student, and if memory serves me, the women of my generation worked hard and paid dearly for the opportunity to express ourselves in whatever manner we felt appropriate - whether it be to dance at TD's or to be an opponent of the very concept of their advertising in a university newspaper.

Column: Students' ideas benefit library

During the past two spring semesters a random sample of UNM faculty and students have had the opportunity to participate in a nationally conducted survey regarding the General Library's (GL) collections and services. This is the first of three articles to address specific concerns commented upon by the participants of this year's survey.

Letter: Bush's enthusiasm misleading

Once again, I have to really question the words that come out of our illustrious president's mouth. Last week I heard a news clip from Dubya's economic summit. Bush was quoted as saying he was confident of an economic upswing. His optimism is based on his strong belief in the spirit of our nation's people and the fruits of their labor.

LETTER: U.N. World Summit is last chance for change

Editor, After the events of the past year, and with the ongoing post-Sept. 11 dialogues regarding U.S. foreign policy and our internal state of affairs (patriotism vs. tolerance, security vs. civil liberties, etc.), it seems that discussion of the environment and matters of sustainable growth and development have fallen to the wayside.

LETTER: Phrase 'Under God' in pledge is harmful

Editor, In the Lobo, Stephanie Neubeck wrote, "I, personally, have never heard of a law requiring all American citizens to say the Pledge of Allegiance. In all the schools I have ever attended . . . I have never been forced to say the pledge." Actually, half of the states now require the pledge as part of the school day and half a dozen more recommend it.

COLUMN: Anarchism: do try this at home

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist By popular demand, I bring you the shortest class you'll have this semester: Anarchism 101, introduction to anarchist thought in 700 words or less. I'll warn you that you shouldn't bother to take this as a definitive course, for two reasons.
