Death penalty, even for McVeigh, isn’t justifiable
June 14Thousands of journalists were clamoring to best describe the emotion that embodied Monday’s execution of Timothy McVeigh.

I could not be more proud of Senator Jeffords of Vermont. It is encouraging to know that independent, thoughtful people exist in Washington who place the needs of their country and constituents ahead of the needs of the Republican or Democratic Parties.
Thank you for your coverage on the recent UNM Network problems. The intermittent connection and slowdown problems were corrected May 31. The situation was caused by a combination of network upgrade problems, incompatibility issues between some UNM department-specific equipment and UNM Network devices and another series of denial-of-service attacks, which were coincidental and compounded the other two problems.
Vermont Sen. James Jeffords’ defection from the Republican Party highlights the selfishness of the Bush administration. The Republican Party now faces a dilemma that could break its infamous reputation of running a tight ship that always votes the party line. The party must decide whether making money is more important than caring for our future.
Sometimes, the Roman Catholic Church just doesn’t get it. Neither do a lot of people who violently opposed artist Alma L¢pez’s “scandalous” rendering of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Tuesday night, Estero High School in Estero, Fla., held its graduation ceremonies. One of the graduating seniors was not allowed to attend. Lindsay Brown, a National Merit Scholar and honor student who had never before been in trouble at school, was suspended for having a kitchen knife in her car.
I love baseball, but something about Wednesday’s special election just didn’t sit well with me. It wasn’t the question of using city money to support baseball. I have no problem endorsing a recreational activity that has long been part of the city’s culture.
The moth outbreak on campus and around the city is not an unusual occurrence. It happens every few years, depending on the previous winter weather.
We are responding to a letter in the May 1 Daily Lobo from Bob Anderson. He seems confused about why professor Mohammed El-Genk was chosen as the 46th Annual Research Lecturer and wrote, “I am greatly disappointed that UNM gave a prestigious award, several thousand dollars and time off to someone who is basically using our school to help the military wage war in space.” This comment is inaccurate and unfair.
As if Jeremy Reynalds weren’t enough, there’s a new radical religious columnist on the block. It’s a diabolical plot. Today the Daily Lobo, tomorrow the world. (Insert evil laugh here.)
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate UNM’s Graduating Class of 2001. We at Parking and Transportation Services commend our graduates on a job well done and wish them the very best as they head on to new careers or advanced degree work. We hope that your celebrations are both safe and joyous and offer these suggestions to make commencement and convocations as enjoyable and hassle-free for you and your families as possible.
It is with great regret that I write this editorial to apologize to Daily Lobo readers and columnist Richard Berthold.
Suicide is a complex, behavioral response to someone feeling helplessly trapped in a bad situation. People feeling suicidal often are not aware of alternative actions they can take to alleviate or change themselves or their situation.
Editor, We have seen many examples in the last couple of weeks from people who do not believe in reparations to African-Americans.
Editor, I applaud and appreciate your decision to print David Horowitz's controversial advertisement regarding race reparations.
It is certainly understandable that some old lady clutching an icon of the Virgin might not fully understand the meaning of free expression, but it is always disappointing to see university students assume a similar intolerant stance.
