Those who are mentally ill need guidance and care

Editor, Isn’t this latest occurrence of APD killings all about our ongoing debate regarding police brutality? Not that the death of Mary Hawkes was, of a certainty, unjustly perpetrated by law-enforcement personnel

The Lobo Letter

The semester is almost over and students are studying for their final exams. Registration is already open for the first semester of 2014-2015 academic year and I know students, with help from their advisors and some online curricular planning tools, are deciding what to take next year.

#OURUNM upholds the values of a diverse UNM

Editor, Emily Larsen, a student at UNM, wrote a letter appearing in Friday’s Daily Lobo which stated that “the hate and resentment expressed toward the ‘rich and white’ (allegedly by #OURUNM at our first march)

The Peer Review

Tucked away in the corner of Zimmerman Library, the West Wing—better known as Harry Potter Hall—offers a historic study space for students who need some quiet time. The ancient wooden furniture encourages a strict study schedule, emitting a reprimanding squeak every time you dare slouch in your chair.

Our UNM coalition already lost if filled with hate speech

Editor, I am all for lower student fees and tuition. I could even get on board with higher salaries for high-quality professors and instructors. So naturally, I was very interested when I first heard about the Our UNM coalition and their efforts to try and raise awareness about these issues.

Sexual assault trauma is real, believe the victim

Editor, What do you do when someone tells you they’ve been sexually assaulted? Sometimes, we demand answers. We ask how, when, why and for all the details. Deep down we feel like if we can get the right answer, we will know the victim asked for it and we won’t make the same mistake so we will be safe.

#Relationship status: So this is love?

“I just want to make something work with us, Josh. I want to build a relationship.” That was what Sam told me last week. Before I continue with my newest relationship drama, some of you may be wondering what happened to Cody.

Beware the cost of living in the Land of Mañana

If you haven’t seen it in full force, you’ve seen hints of it — Albuquerque is where ambition goes to die. This basic human weakness is the theme in “The Land of Manana.” Being lackadaisical and whimsy seeps in and takes deep root as a motif of easy living.

Dr. Pegs Prescription

A few weeks ago I had the great good fortune to go backpacking in the Grand Canyon. Ten of us did 35 miles and 10,000 vertical feet down and up in 4 days with 40 pound packs. Not bad for a bunch of mostly middle aged people!

4-21 Dellarosa letter

Editor, I am writing to address the issue of hydraulic fracturing — “fracking” — near Chaco Canyon National Park. If allowed, I believe this would be an egregious violation of a treasured national heritage site, the citizens of the state of New Mexico, and of the natural environment ...

Possibility of ‘fraccidents’ outweighs the benefits

Editor, With the amount of fracking significantly increasing, the dangers that come with it are going to increase as well. Fracking has become a risky way of getting oil and gas from the ground by releasing air pollutants, contaminating groundwater and damaging landscapes.

The peaceful revolution is dead

I hereby declare the ‘Occupy’ movement officially dead. The popular grassroots phenomenon that captured the imagination of the country for several weeks during the fall of 2011 is long gone, and with it probably our last hope for any sort of peaceful revolution.

The Bible has become an instrument of torture

Editor, People have used the Bible: to torture and kill people of other religions and of no religion; to put men above women; to put whites above non-whites; to oppose marriage between whites and non-whites; to massacre Native Americans, Palestinians, Jews and gays.

America’s military must be strong in today’s world

Editor, We are cutting back our military because the current administration believes the world is a safer place. The administration wants to cut the Army by 80,000 to 440,000, which is the smallest since 1940, just prior to our unprepared entry into WWII.
