Student shares reality of sugar-dating site

Editor, Am I a gold digger? The Albuquerque Journal seems to think so. When I saw my professor with the front page of last Tuesday’s Journal, my heart stopped. The story was about UNM students using the sugar-dating site seekingarangement.com to pay for college — the same site I had once used.

Relapse to the need for military might

Editor, I must thank Donald A. Moskowitz and his letter, “US military might keeps world powers in check,” in last Wednesday’s Daily Lobo for the nostalgic return to the family dinner table of my youth.

The Peer Review

When asked about collaborating on music with other rappers, hip hop artist B.o.B. asks, “Would you rather have genetically modified (flavor)-less strawberries be as big as your head but ain’t got no flavor in it, or would you want a real piece of fruit?

Does my opinion or vote even count?

Editor, This letter is in response to your article, “El Centro Leader Faces Contention,” in the Daily Lobo’s Jan. 13 issue. Being an active participant at the candidate forums, it is important that misconceptions be put to rest.

Transient “Christmas spirit” is a farce

Yay, the Holiday season is finally over — that time of the year when most Americans pretend to go along with all that “peace on earth, good will toward men” crap. What a sham. I’m annoyed that so many “good Christians” can totally ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ for eleven and a half months out of the year and then suddenly decide to care about other people for two weeks. They call it the “Christmas spirit.”

US military might keeps world powers in check

Editor, A former owner of an ice cream company is waging a campaign questioning the necessity of the Pentagon’s large-scale weapons systems, including the F-35 fighter-bomber, which has been plagued with problems yet to be resolved.

Dr. Pegs Prescription

Winter in New Mexico brings a double-dry-whammy. The air in our high desert is dry to begin with, and between the cold temperatures outdoors and the heated air indoors, our poor skin suffers this time of year. You know what I mean. The scaly hands, the cracked fingers, the rough soles.

Many corporations will self-destruct from misregulation

Editor, Cancerous regulation is required to maintain the pay of the overpaid. It’s funny to think that a hyper-efficient organization could value an entity over 100 times another, when the most complex system we know of — the human body — only allows about a times 10 multiplier for our brain.

Same-sex couples should learn about Social Security aid

Editor, When New Mexico legalized same-sex marriage, it also opened the door for married gay and lesbian couples to receive an array of federal retirement benefits. Married gay and lesbian couples are now entitled to apply for the same Social Security benefits that had been only available to heterosexual married couples.

Expanding into space requires human risks

Editor, A creeping sensation of inevitable failure follows every conversation about space. We’ve been to the moon. We’ve sent multiple complex systems to Mars. Obviously, we sent the wrong thing, because we’re not there. Every effort to establish a sustainable system outside our planet has failed.

Peaceful resolution not considered after 9/11

Editor, It is said that unless we learn from it, history tends to repeat itself. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. In response, the Global War on Terror, with major battle fronts being fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, have caused 66,000 American casualties and a total of over $3.1 trillion in expenditures with no definitive success in sight.

The Lobo Letter

Though the weather has taken its course, we’d like to wish you a warm finals week! This fall GPSA has worked hard to identify, prioritize and develop strategies for various issues that are important to graduate students.

Palestinians need the same freedom as SA

Editor, Nelson Mandela, perhaps the most iconic figure in the struggle against South African Apartheid, has died. It sometimes shocks me to remember that the Apartheid regime in South Africa continued to exist well into my lifetime, with U.S. government support provided to it for a good portion of that time period.

Garcia: I just want my privileges returned

Editor, With regard to the December 5 Lobo article, “Garcia Wants to Return to Campus” I would like to offer a few comments. First, the article contains an erroneous statement that I and others “managed” the website (Southwest Companions) and were involved in “running” it. This is absolutely false.

Love can hurt, even in our dreams

I don’t often dream about real people. I’ve been having a reoccurring dream about one particular woman. She’s the object of perhaps the greatest love I’ve had for any woman. Perhaps just a great first love. We split under rather extreme circumstances. I avoided all contact with her and knowledge of her life — partly our of respect for her and partly out of necessity.

Dr. Pegs Prescription

Dear readers, This is my last column of the semester. This means most of you are too busy to read it, having higher priorities like studying for finals or writing papers. This is fine; I’m not offended. There is a time and place for everything.

Kirtland’s pollution ignored due to fear of defying power

Editor, The Kirtland Air Force Base jet fuel spill of 24 million gallons is the largest poisoning of underground water in the history of the United States. 24 million gallons is almost twice the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster. Read the powerful lead story in the Nov. 28 – Dec. 4 issue of the Weekly Alibi exposing this catastrophe.

Hatred overpowered potential prosperity

Editor, In reply to the previous letters regarding the State of Israel and differing versions of history, I can only say this: The Jewish people accepted the desert; the Arabs refused the fertile land of honey.
