Softball: Lobos come back, win second game against NMSU

After their loss to New Mexico State University in March, the Lobos had been hoping to avenge the loss, and they did just that on Tuesday, April 21, winning 10-6.  “I think we were playing better softball a month later than we were a month ago,” University of New Mexico Head Coach Nicole Orgeron said.  The game against the Aggies started with NMSU scoring 4 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a 3-run home run from designated player Madi Bachman.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week

Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes, certain athletes contribute to their team’s shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. The NFL draft and NBA playoffs are here and we have seen a bobbleheaded pick and bobbleheaded performance.

Baseball: Isotopes take the series from the Comets

The Isotopes returned to Albuquerque after a series win in El Paso against the Chihuahuas for a six-game set against the Oklahoma City Comets. The Isotopes would go on to win the series, taking four of the six games. At the top of the second inning in game one of the series, the Comets got on the board first with a 5-run inning highlighted by left fielder Zach Ehrhard hitting the first inside the park grand slam at Isotopes Park. The Isotopes scored their second run in the 5th and were down 9-2 before a rally in the bottom of the seventh, plating 4 runs.

Baseball: Lobos salvage series against Wolf Pack

After sweeping San Diego State University the previous weekend but dropping a game in Las Cruces against New Mexico State University, the Lobos returned to Santa Ana Star Field for a three-game set against the University of Nevada Wolf Pack.  The University of New Mexico would win one of the three games in the series, which was held Friday to Sunday, April 17-19, with Nevada taking first place in the Mountain West. “We could have just as easily won two out of three or lost all three games, but winning one was very important and I’m proud of the fight this team showed in this series,” Lobo Head Coach Tod Brown said.

Football: Linebackers anchor down defense during scrimmage

The Lobo football team wrapped up their third week of spring practice on Friday, April 17. The University of New Mexico held its second scrimmage throughout practice as they inch closer to their annual spring game. Linebackers kept making play after play during the scrimmage. The linebacker position has a case to be the strongest position group heading into next season.

Baseball: Lobos fall to Red Raiders

The Lobos returned to Santa Ana Star field after their weekend series win against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a rematch with the Texas Tech University Red Raiders who run-ruled them the last time these teams matched up and ultimately crushed the Lobos again, 10-5.  The game began with Ethin Woltz, the first of 10 pitchers the Lobos threw in this bullpen game, spinning two scoreless innings while Lobos designated hitter Damian Garcia started scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first.

Baseball: Lobos sweep Aztecs out of first place

In a series between two of the top teams in the Mountain West, the Lobos came out on top by sweeping the three-game set and taking first place in the Mountain West standings. After losing to Texas Tech University earlier in the week, the University of New Mexico was able to win three straight against the San Diego State University Aztecs on April 10-12. Game one of the series was an absolute thrill ride. Starting pitcher Cristian Mogen was looking for a bounce-back start after a rough outing his last time in Las Vegas, and he delivered in a big way. He gave the Lobos a quality start, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 11 while walking just 1 runner.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos lose key contributor to transfer portal

At the end of the 2024-25 basketball season, the University of New Mexico men’s basketball faced a mass upheaval, losing every single player and coach for the 2025-26 roster. This offseason will have slightly more continuity, though not by much. After the NCAA Transfer Portal opened on Tuesday, April 7, only one player has announced his intention to remain with the Lobos while seven players have declared they will enter the portal. In his first year as head coach, Eric Olen took the Lobos to the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament and finished the season with a 26-11 record.

Eagan Era Begins For Women’s Basketball

The University of New Mexico welcomed its seventh women’s basketball coach on Wednesday, April 8, at an introductory press conference that saw Amy Eagan assume the role as decade of Mike Bradbury officially ended. Eagan faces the task of retaining the players on the roster, transfer hunting for new additions and staff building, all to build a roster for next season that can compete for a Mountain West title. Eagan has experience competing at the top and the success that follows, with an overall coaching record of 329-191 that spans across five different stops. Under her belt of 17 seasons, she has six conference titles, five NCAA DII Tournament appearances and a DII National Runner-up trophy.

Aces spoil opening week at Isotopes Park

After dropping their first series in Oklahoma City, the Isotopes returned to Albuquerque last week and dropped four of their six games against the Reno Aces. On Tuesday, March 31, starting pitcher Gabriel Hughes began the first game of the series by collecting two of his eventual eight strikeouts that night, tying his career record. Albuquerque and Reno traded runs in the second inning, but both clubs sat at a standstill until the Aces broke through with third baseman LuJames Groover's go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning. The score held at 2-1 through to the eighth inning, when the Aces scored 6 runs, highlighted by a 3-run double from center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt. With a final score of 8-1, the Aces spoiled the Isotopes’ home opener.

Women’s Tennis: Lobos lose momentum after doubles match

After the Lobos took the win from Colorado State University, the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team seemed to have fallen back with a defeat from the University of Wyoming Cowgirls. UNM women’s tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory over Colorado State on Thursday, April 2, rallying after losing in doubles. The Lobos dominated singles play, winning four of six matches.  Lobo Head Coach Vicky Maes shared her expectations before the game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Golden Hurricanes end Lobos’ season in Indianapolis

The New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team had an excellent showing in the National Invitational tournament, winning three games at home against the Sam Houston State University Bearkats, George Washington University Revolutionaries and Saint Joseph University Hawks in The Pit by double digits. Their spirit was not enough to carry them to a complete victory in front of fans in Indianapolis, as they came up short in a close game, battling the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes in the semifinals 74-69.

Men’s basketball: Lobos stop the revolutionaries, advance to NIT quarterfinals.

The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team was back at The Pit after an impressive showing in round one of the National Invitation Tournament against the Sam Houston Bearkats, and looked to build on that performance in round 2 at home versus the George Washington University Revolutionaries. It was a tight game in the beginning, but the Lobos would go on a 13-6 run to lead 20-12 early. The Revolutionaries scored 5 unanswered points, cutting the deficit to 3 points before dunks by Lobo forward Antonio Chol, and guard Uriah Tenette.

Head coach Mike Bradbury calls out to the Lobo bench Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 at WisePies Arena. The Lobos will play Boise State on the road this Wednesday.

Decade of Bradbury comes to a close for women’s basketball

The University of New Mexico will be looking for a new head coach for its women’s basketball program, as newly appointed Athletic Director Ryan Berryman made one of his first decisions as AD in parting ways with ten-year women’s basketball Head Coach Mike Bradbury.  Bradbury and Berryman had met previously to discuss the future of the women’s basketball program and a contract extension, which Berryman was unwilling to grant due to the program not meeting necessary expectations, leading to a buyout of his existing contract, according to a statement put out by Berryman.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week

Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes, certain athletes contribute to their team’s shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. Miami Dolphins NFL free agency officially started on March 11, and ever since it began the Miami Dolphins have made some Bobblehead-esque moves. To Miami’s credit they cut quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was arguably one of the key contributors to the team's lack of success in recent years. To replace Tagovailoa, Miami decided to go out and sign quarterback Malik Willis from the Green Bay Packers, signing him to a three year, $67.5 million contract with $45 million guaranteed.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos trap the Bearkats in NIT

After missing out on March Madness, the Lobo men’s basketball team has shifted their focus to the National Invitation Tournament, looking to end their season on a better note. To kick off the action, the University of New Mexico hosted the Sam Houston State University Bearkats in the first round at The Pit on Wednesday, March 18. By the end, the Bearkats most likely were wishing their invitation got lost in the mail, as the Lobos dismantled Sam Houston 107-83. The game started off fast and furious. The Lobos came out with a purpose, scoring 16 points to take an early nine-point lead less than 4 minutes into the first half, though the Bearkats did not go away; they went on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit down to 8 points.
