Jumper finds balance amid tests and training

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo Sophomore jumper Hagit Salamon keeps on improving for the UNM women's track and field team. On Saturday, Salamon swept the long and triple jumps with her best marks in college at 19-2 1/2 and 40-1 1/2 at the Lobos' last home meet of the season.

Going out on a sour note

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo The UNM women's tennis team was riding its longest winning streak of the season, until the best team in the conference got in its way Friday. After winning the last five matches, the No. 3-seeded Lobos' season ended with a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Brigham Young on Friday in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Former UNM player goes pro

Staff Report Quincy Black is taking his football career to the next level. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Black, a former UNM linebacker, as the fourth pick in the third round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. Black was the 68th pick overall. Black could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Lobos leave rivals in the dust

There may not have been a better way for the UNM track and field team to end its regular season. The Lobos won 15 of 38 events at Saturday's Don Kirby Memorial Invitational, the last competition before the conference championships.

Lobos dominate Hawaii-Hilo

A hit batter, two errors and a blooper in the second inning sealed Hawaii-Hilo's fate in a win for the UNM baseball team Sunday. The Lobos scored five runs off two hits in the second en route to a 12-2 victory.

Freshman golfer a quick study

by Adrian Doerfler Daily Lobo It didn't take long for freshman Jodi Ewart to make a splash on the UNM women's golf team. Ewart was named Mountain West Conference Freshman Player of the Year and Co-player of the Year after winning the MWC Women's Golf Championship on April 21.

Matt and Mark Henry have been focused on coaching the UNM track and field team, so talking about their retirement isn't their favorite topic. However, ask the athletes on the team about the coaches, and they will talk at length about their admiration of the Henrys.

Softball's solid beginning to weekend takes sour turn

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo The UNM softball team's Utah trip started well, but the Lobos stumbled in their second set of games. After sweeping Utah on Thursday, the Lobos dropped two games to Brigham Young over the weekend in Provo, Utah. UNM fell to 14-16 and 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while BYU improved to 29-17 and 8-2.

Tennis disappointed with MWC ranking

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo If you think the UNM men's tennis team is celebrating its 14-8 record and No. 55 national ranking, think again. The Lobos head into the Mountain West Conference tournament with a 3-3 conference record and a No. 4 seed. Head coach Alan Dils said the seeding is a letdown.

Fall looking good after spring wins

Goalkeeper Mike Graczyk sees similarities between this spring and the spring of 2005. This fall, if the UNM men's soccer team plays anywhere near the level of the 2005 squad, it could be a good year for the Lobos. UNM played two exhibition games Saturday, beating Division II Fort Lewis 1-0 in Albuquerque and then Division III Trinity 3-0 in Santa Fe.

Freshman doesn't waste any time

Freshman Sandra Zmak didn't wait long to make an impact on the UNM women's tennis team. Since joining the team this fall, Zmak has a 21-11 record in singles. She won her first tournament- - the third flight of the San Diego Fall Classic - in San Diego on Nov. 5.

Alford expects staff to bring in recruits

The UNM men's basketball team can focus on recruiting and scheduling now that the staff is in place. Lobo head coach Steve Alford announced the hiring of two more assistant coaches Monday, adding Billy Garrett and Ryan Miller to UNM's program.
