The UNM ski team is not where it needs to be yet, but a solid performance at its home meet could help boost the team the rest of the season. The Lobos earned a third-place finish at this weekend's New Mexico Invitational, sweeping the slalom events in the process.

Softball team tramples third-ranked UCLA, 13-1

Staff Report The UNM softball team clobbered the No. 3 team in the nation, the University of California-Los Angeles. UNM beat UCLA 13-1 in five innings in Saturday's second game at the Kajikawa Classic held in Tempe, Ariz. After the victory, the Lobos were shutout 5-0 by Florida on Sunday.

First-place finishes keep rolling in

Track and field head coach Matt Henry has no idea why Ariel Burr is such a talented runner. "If I could answer that, I'd be a millionaire," Henry said. "It's not any one thing I can put my finger on."

The UNM men's basketball team had a chance to topple No. 13 Air Force on Saturday at The Pit. Too bad for the Lobos. They lost their focus in the 60-51 defeat, head coach Ritchie McKay said.

Coach gets chance to reconstruct team

It has been more than a decade since the UNM volleyball team went to the NCAA Tournament. Newly hired head coach Jeff Nelson plans to change that next season. "Building a program is the foundation on what we are going to do here at UNM," Nelson said. "This is my third time working on re-establishing a program. I enjoy the challenge of rebuilding. I think it's exciting."

Football takes on 25 recruits

The way head coach Rocky Long sees it, the UNM football team has a chance to be pretty good next season. The Lobos announced the signing of 25 recruits Wednesday, including nine transfers and 16 high school players.

UNM dominates at home track

It wasn't the toughest competition of the season, but the UNM track and field team won seven events this weekend at its home meet. The Albuquerque Convention Center was a quieter place than last week, when the Lobos hosted a dozen of the nation's top track and field teams. This week, only three teams on the women's side and one team on the men's competed against the Lobos.

Coach comes with impressive record

The UNM volleyball team has found its new head coach. Lobo Athletic Director Paul Krebs announced Monday that Jeff Nelson will replace Kelley McKee, who resigned after five seasons Dec. 5.

Runner takes on new challenge

Christina Zarrella is quickly making herself known on the UNM track and field team. Zarrella, who usually competes in the 400-meter dash and long jump, raced in the 800-meter run at the DeHart Invitational hosted by UNM on Saturday.

The UNM women's basketball team gave fans a glimpse of how well it was expected to play this year. The Lobos pounced on the University of Nevada-Las Vegas early en route to a 77-56 victory Saturday at The Pit.
