From Zambia to UNM green

Zambia is more than a stone's throw from Albuquerque. That distance didn't stop senior Madalitso Muthiya from making the trip to join the UNM men's golf team. It didn't hurt that there were some incentives as well. "New Mexico has good weather, good facilities and they also gave me a good scholarship," Muthiya said.

High stakes and hazards

Between seeing punctured lungs and people paralyzed, it's no wonder UNM pole-vaulting coach Scott Steffan says the sport appeals only to risk takers. Steffan's got two athletes who fit that bill perfectly. Junior Derek Mackel and freshman Whitney Johnson said they pride themselves in being a bit over the edge.

Fencing exercise of body, mind

Some people can't stomach the sight of a metal-masked, sword-wielding combatant charging their direction, swinging and stabbing away. Some people can't fence. "It's not for everybody," said Andy Carey, the president of UNM's fencing club. "A lot of people, when somebody comes barreling down on them with a sword, they've had enough. But people who like it usually run with it."
