UNM schools San Diego

There was a reason senior Mandi Moore came up four points shy of the 1,000-point milestone after the Lobos' 78-58 win over the San Diego State Aztecs on Thursday at The Pit. "I don't really think about it that much," she said. "I missed some shots today, and I could have had it, but my family is coming into town on Saturday, and hopefully it'll happen then.

The Lobo women's tennis team proved it could do more than just play with a nationally ranked team Saturday at the Lobo Tennis Club. Women's water polo dives into season

Women's water polo players can get dirty under the water. "Men get rough and punch and shove, but women are really grabby and pull off bathing suits," said co-captain Annalyse Arguelles. "If the ref doesn't see it, then it's not a foul." Co-captain Kaye Eldridge showed a scar on her hip she said was from a toenail scratch.

Dynamic duo distracts defense

Move over Barnum and Bailey. There's a new two-man circus in town. The UNM men's basketball duo of Danny Granger and David Chiotti put on a show in the Lobos' 91-72 rout of the Brigham Young Cougars at The Pit. BYU didn't deal much with those two players when the Cougars beat UNM 68-53 in Provo, Utah, on Jan.

Going from stand-in to stand-out starter

Replacing the Mountain West Conference all-time assist leader couldn't have been an easy task. UNM women's basketball head coach Don Flanagan had that job ahead of him when senior and captain Mandi Moore went down on Feb. 5 with an eye injury. Cue stage left: sophomore Katie Montgomery.

Lobos gear up for home play

by Daniel Schrader Daily Lobo It's been a hectic season start for UNM baseball. The Lobos started with four straight road losses but are coming off a convincing three-game series sweep of intrastate rival New Mexico State - a feat that hasn't been accomplished since 1987.

Player vs. Player

Balling till he's falling by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Jose Canseco left his indelible mark on me when a fly ball bounced off his head for a home run in 1993. Canseco was an entertainer. He'll tell you this in his book, Juiced. And boy, if the 1993 incident is any testament, was I entertained.

Lobo victory advances quest for second place

The Lobos' catchphrase of the week was "must-win." Head coach Ritchie McKay said Saturday that Monday's game against Air Force was a "definite must-win" for the team. Juniors David Chiotti and Mark Walters mimicked their coach's statement. They both said if the Lobos lost to Air Force, it would be detrimental to snagging the second seed in the Mountain West Conference.

Malone will be missed

Sometimes sports make me sad. I was halfway through a dayshift at my waiting job Wednesday when my roommate called to tell me Karl Malone - my all-time favorite player on my favorite team in my favorite sport - had just announced his retirement. I was born in Salt Lake City and grew up rooting for the Jazz.
