Head coach Ritchie McKay pulled forward Danny Granger off the court with 45 seconds left in the game against Colorado State on Saturday. The senior sat on the bench, put his head in his hands and cried, wiping his eyes with the bottom of his jersey. "I told myself I wasn't going to cry," he said.
A lot of heavy mojo was floating around the Lobos in their 72-61 win over Colorado State - a raucous, sold-out Pit crowd, senior night and overwhelming "bubble watch" talk that necessitated a win. The Lobos needed that win to keep their Big Dance hopes alive should they falter in the Mountain West Conference tournament this week.
The last time the UNM women's basketball team won at Colorado State, 10-year head coach Don Flanagan was coaching basketball at Eldorado High School. The Colorado State road monkey is finally off the Lobos' backs now with a 71-63 win in Fort Collins, Colo.
UNM could not have picked a tougher opponent for its first match of the season. Coach Shannon Robinson said Air Force is the best team UNM plays all season, and in turn, UNM is the best competition for the Falcons in the region. "It's a big rivalry because we are the best team they get to play," he said.
by Daniel Schrader Daily Lobo The UNM baseball team will try to pick up its play this weekend against a struggling Northern Colorado team. The Lobos, 4-8, are coming off a devastating weekend at the Crown Plaza-Rice Invitational in Houston. The Nebraska Cornhuskers convincingly beat the Lobos and went on to win the tournament.
Can the Lobos make the NCAA Tournament? ESPN.com has added UNM to its list of "bubble teams" on the outside looking in at the field of 65. Andy Glockner wrote on the site that UNM was the most interesting of the squads on the bubble. He mentioned the Lobos' scant three losses with Danny Granger in the lineup, and that last week's win over Utah was big for the team's hopes.
Balling till he's falling by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The best thing about sports movies is that you don't have to be a sports fan to like them. You don't have to be great at basketball to love "Hoosiers." You don't have to be an ape to love "Most Valuable Primate" - huh, Phil? But picking only five great sports movies? That's like asking Bill Murray to pick his five favorite hairpieces.
There were tears left, tears right and tears center. At the end of the Lobos' 68-65 Senior Day win against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday, the waterworks were flowing freely from fans, teammates and one of those who was honored - Mandi Moore.
With 18 seconds left in the Lobos' 68-65 win against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday, senior captain Mandi Moore went to the line and tried to put the Lobos up by three. The fourth-best free-throw shooter in UNM women's basketball history at the line in the waning seconds? Easy.
by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Matt Gonzales and Ben Ortega led the UNM men to a fifth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Colorado Springs last weekend. UNM finished with 67 points, the highest score the Lobos have recorded in 15 years.
by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo The UNM men's tennis team fell behind early against Sacramento State but fought back to win its home meet, 6-1. This was UNM's first encounter with Sacramento State, but the Lobos have been successful against teams from the Big Sky Conference and hold a record of 31-1.
Staff Report Becca Barras brought home two gold medals and one silver from the Mountain West Conference swimming and diving championships last weekend. UNM placed sixth at the event, with 387 points. The overall winner was University of Nevada-Las Vegas, with 701.
by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo In what will be head coach Bill Spahn's final Mountain West Conference championship meet, his UNM swimming and diving team got off to a great start Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. The Lobos stood in second place overall after one day.
There was a reason senior Mandi Moore came up four points shy of the 1,000-point milestone after the Lobos' 78-58 win over the San Diego State Aztecs on Thursday at The Pit. "I don't really think about it that much," she said. "I missed some shots today, and I could have had it, but my family is coming into town on Saturday, and hopefully it'll happen then.
by Daniel Schrader Daily Lobo After a disappointing weekend series for UNM baseball, powerhouse teams will greet the Lobos this weekend at the Crown Plaza-Rice Invitational in Houston. UNM's squad mustered up only one win in a three-game series against the visiting Texas State Bobcats last weekend.
Despite an early lead, the Lobo baseball team could not overcome a 9-2 deficit in Sunday's game against Texas State. The loss puts UNM at a 4-6 record for the season. "We kind of came out flat," junior catcher Carlos Castillo said. The Lobos scored two runs early in the game.
The Lobo women's tennis team proved it could do more than just play with a nationally ranked team Saturday at the Lobo Tennis Club. The day after sweeping Montana State 7-0, the Lobos walked away from Oklahoma, winning the contest 6-1. In front of one of its bigger crowds this season, UNM had contributions from each player.
Women's water polo players can get dirty under the water. "Men get rough and punch and shove, but women are really grabby and pull off bathing suits," said co-captain Annalyse Arguelles. "If the ref doesn't see it, then it's not a foul." Co-captain Kaye Eldridge showed a scar on her hip she said was from a toenail scratch.
It took just two plays for Danny Granger to break open the Saturday night contest against Brigham Young at The Pit. Granger nailed a three right in the nose of Cougar defender Chris Miles for UNM's first points. On the next play, he took a steal from the defensive end and threw down a one-handed dunk to put the Lobos up 5-0.
