NM snowboarder sails to third

For the first time in three years Chris Dunsirn did not win the snowboarding competition he entered - he took third. "He acts like that's bad," Dunsirn's friend and snowboarding peer John Shires said. "But that's pretty good considering it was the national championships.

Hnida here for another year

After place kicker Katie Hnida came forward with allegations that she was raped by a teammate at the University of Colorado, she filed an appeal to the NCAA requesting a sixth year of athletic eligibility. On Friday, Hnida's appeal was granted. The 2003-04 NCAA Division I bylaw 30.

Ben Ortega Junior Track and Field Ortega earned his first outdoor victory in two years Saturday at the University of Texas-El Paso Springtime Invitational. Ortega literally won by a nose, as he leaned past UTEP's Stephen Sameoi at the finish line for the 5,000-meter win.

Outdoors beckons to track team

The UNM track and field team will head to El Paso, Texas for the UTEP Springtime Invitational on Saturday. It's only the second outdoor competition of the year and if the indoor season is any indication, UNM will be an extremely competitive team in the Mountain West Conference.

KRT Campus PHOENIX - The last time the Alabama Crimson Tide made it to the NCAA men's basketball Sweet 16, their coach wore plaid and was named Wimp. The last time Alabama made it to the Elite Eight? Try, well, never. As most every sports fan in Florida knows, Alabama is known for its football.

Aztecs pose challenge to UNM

The Lobos welcome the San Diego State Aztecs to Isotopes Park this weekend for a three-game Mountain West matchup. It's a return to conference play for UNM, which traveled to Las Cruces Wednesday and lost to NMSU 16-9. In that game, the Lobos failed to come through with timely hitting.

Second base runs in family

UNM outfielder Sabrina Sandberg said it must run in her blood. Her uncle, Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg, is arguably one of the best second baseman's of all time, and her brother Jared plays second for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Ryne was traded to the Cubs in 1982, where he won nine straight Gold Gloves and played in the Major League All-Star game from 1984-1993.

Jennifer Delich Senior Skiing Delich is the Alpine ski team captain and won the women's individual title in the giant slalom last week at the NCAA Ski Championships in Truckee, Calif. She is only the ninth UNM student athlete to ever win an individual national title.

Unhappy ending

With 2:57 left to play, UNM forward Melissa Forest hit a 3-pointer to bring the Lobos within one possession of leading the Florida Gators for the first time Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Pit erupted in an indescribable deafening blare as UNM faithfuls kept their hopes alive after watching the Lobos struggle from behind the entire game.

Softball team takes two at home from Aggies

The Lobo softball team cleaned house this weekend and improved to 23-14 with a sweep of intrastate rival New Mexico State 2-0, 4-1 Saturday at Lobo Field. Senior outfielder Sabrina Sandberg led UNM at the plate in game one, going 2-3 and sending a home run sailing over the centerfield wall in the fourth inning for the Lobos' second score.

Big inning gives Lobos comeback win

A monster eighth inning was the difference Sunday in the Lobos' 11-6 win over Utah. Down 5-6 after seven innings of play, UNM's rally started with a slow-rolling single up the third base line by freshman infielder Jay Russell, who was bunted to second on the next at-bat by freshman Tim Grady.

Gators take bite out of Lobos' game

A year ago, Florida basketball player Tashia Morehead was leading Gulf Coast Community College to the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship. She scored 46 points in the NJCAA title game and was named MVP of the tournament. This year she is playing a starring role on a much bigger stage - the NCAA tournament.

Runner raises cash for UNM

Lobo skiers earn first-ever NCAA title

Staff Report The Lobo ski team made history Saturday by becoming the first UNM team to ever win an NCAA title. UNM won the 2004 NCAA Skiing Championships in Truckee, Calif. by a 42-point margin over defending national champion Utah. Senior Jennifer Delich brought home a women's individual title in the Giant Slalom and freshman Peter Roering fell just 0.

Women repeat as Mountain West Conference Champs

DENVER - The UNM women's basketball team defended its Mountain West Conference Championship crown in what turned into a blow out of the Utah Utes, 71-50 in the championship game Saturday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo. The Lobos were behind 32-27 in the first, when junior guard Mandi Moore took an elbow in the face.

DENVER, Colo. - The third time is supposed to be the charm. Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament, the Lobos checked in and out of the heartbreak hotel, losing to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for the third time this year 55-53.
