Lobo men battle to tie against fiesty Bearcats

by Derek Davis Daily Lobo The UNM men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against the University of Cincinnati Sunday afternoon to conclude the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational at the UNM Soccer Complex. The game took almost four hours to complete due to a mix of lightning delays and an overtime session.

Lobos await Texas Tech onslaught

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo Coming off a dominant effort against Texas State-San Marcos last weekend, the Lobos will try to improve their record to 2-0 on Saturday when they travel to Lubbock, Texas to square off against the Red Raiders. Last year UNM was crushed 49-0 by Texas Tech in front of Albuquerque fans and a national television audience.

Volleyball team strives to improve

The UNM volleyball team looks to defend its championship title at the Comcast Lobo Invitational this weekend at Johnson Arena. After last weekend's disappointing outcome at Fresno State, the Lobos plummeted to the bottom of the Mountain West Conference rankings, with a record of 0-3.

Lobos roll in blow out

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo It was a game of New Mexico highlights when the Lobos met the Texas State-San Marcos Bobcats Saturday night. They began with a stellar interception by safety Sidney Wiley and ended with kicker Katie Hnida making history as the first woman to score in a Division I-A game.

UNM backs score, show-up skeptics

True UNM fans were not surprised - however the Lobo backfield shocked Texas State-San Marcos and almost everyone else, Saturday. Although the Lobos were picked second in the Mountain West Conference in Sporting News, the UNM backfield ranked sixth out of the eight teams.

Men's Soccer The men's soccer team started its 2003 season Friday with a hard- fought 1-0 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. Lance Watson scored UNM's first goal of the season during the second half of play, finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

Seventh annual golf clinic a hit for women

Shortly after Jackie Booth started coaching the UNM women's golf team, she approached local car dealer and philanthropist Don Chalmers about becoming a booster. "I told him, 'I want you to go home and think about what you can do for women,'" Booth said.

Athletes of the WEEK

Senior kicker Katie Hnida has earned the New Mexico Daily Lobo female athlete of the week for her performance in the Lobos' 72-8 win over Texas State-San Marcos. Hnida became the first female in history to score in a Division I-A football game. Hnida converted two extra points in the fourth quarter.

Lobo wins millions on tour

Former Lobo Kristi Albers says that when her playing career is finished on the LPGA Tour, she might be interested in a different line of work - coaching collegiate golf. "I think I'd have a lot to offer the girls," said the 16-year tour veteran. "Plus, it would be lots of fun for me too.

Special Section: Haynes has change of pace with Lobos

Art Haynes had been a basketball player most of his life. Basketball is what lead him to Ellsworth Community College in Iowa. Then he walked onto the football team. Two years later, Haynes has a scholarship at UNM. Haynes has proved to be a natural athlete, as he had only one year of experience in each sport prior to college.

UNM football possesses one of the biggest and most talented offensive lines in the nation. The starting five offensive linemen, tabbed "The Hitmen," by teammates are all returning lettermen from a unit that lead UNM to a spot in last year's Las Vegas Bowl.

Long likes Lobos' potential

The 2003 Lobo football team is potentially the best in the history of UNM. Head coach Rocky Long said he hasn't coached a team of this potential since his last season with the UCLA Bruins in 1997. "The last year I was at UCLA we ended up third in the country," Long said.
