While it may be too soon for many UNM students to start thinking about college basketball, the heat is rapidly rising for second-year head coach Ritchie McKay. With five months until tip-off, McKay and the Lobos face an uncertain future draped with unanswered questions.

Men's golf season cut short

The 2002-03 season ended for the UNM men's golf team with a disappointing performance at the NCAA Championship May 27-30, but the Lobos have plenty to hold their heads up about this summer. Although the Lobos played less than stellar golf at the national championship, contested at the ultra-demanding Karsten Creek course in Stillwater, Okla.

Douglas earns Lobo Athlete of the Year

This year's group of UNM athletes was loaded with individual talent. The Fall 2002 season started with a bang as freshman Ben Ashwill scored a team and conference-high 12 goals on the men's soccer team. Then there was Jordan Adams of the women's basketball team whose size and skill has earned her a spot on the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA.

Season ends for Lobo softball

Staff Report The UNM softball team took a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at the hands of top-seeded San Diego State University in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament Friday. Danielle Touhey's RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning lifted the Aztecs to victory over fifth-seeded UNM.

Lobos salvage one from UNLV series

Staff Report Lobo first baseman Chris Alexander homered twice Sunday and UNM got its only win against 16th-ranked UNLV so far this year, 13-10. The home runs were the 24th and 25th of the season for Alexander, setting a new Lobo and Mountain West Conference record.

Women golfers fail to qualify

Staff Report The 2002-03 season came to a disappointing end for the UNM women's golf team May 9-10 at the Central Regional Championship in Lincoln, Neb. The12th-ranked Lobos were in search of a top-eight finish, which would have propelled them into the NCAA championship later this month, but missed out by eight strokes.

Feels like home

Two fans watch the UNM baseball team make its debut at Isotopes Park on Friday night. The Lobos have a deal with the Isotopes that allows UNM to play its home games at Isotopes Park in return for allowing the Isotopes to use UNM parking facilities during their games.

MWC track title to be decided on Lobo turf

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo UNM welcomes eight schools to the Great Friends of UNM Track stadium this week for the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships May 14-17. Competition starts with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon at noon on Wednesday.

Vermilyea may be MLB bound

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo Junior right-handed pitcher James Vermilyea is a soft-spoken guy, which is surprising considering he's such an important leader for this year's UNM baseball team - conference leader, that is. He leads the Mountain West Conference in strikeouts, innings pitched, ERA and is tied for the lead in wins.

Women's golf ready for regional

Fresh off a thrilling one-shot victory at the Mountain West Conference championship, the UNM women's golf team will have a chance to strut its stuff at the regional level in Lincoln, Neb. May 8-10. A top-eight finish at the Central Regional will give the Lobos a birth in the NCAA Championship later this month.

As the sun sets on another year of Lobo basketball, a rising star waits in the horizon, itching for his big opportunity. Although the young man has never stepped foot on The Pit floor in live action, he is sure to make an instant impact on the 2003-04 Lobo men's basketball team.

Davalos enjoys banner year

Growing up in San Antonio, Texas, UNM Athletic Director Rudy Davalos always had aspirations of greatness. "I always wanted to be good at what I did," Davalos said, his Texan accent still very much present. "I've been involved in athletics for about 46 years.

Men's Tennis Two members of the men's tennis team were honored for their accomplishments Monday. Senior Bart Scott received the Regional Tennis Magazine/ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award for the best sportsman in the region. Scott is a four-year letter winner at UNM.

Lobo track team hitting stride

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo The UNM track team produced some of its best marks of the season last weekend at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas. Despite fierce winds, UNM took home wins in eight events and celebrated nine personal-best marks. Junior Sarah Gonzales captured her first career victory in the 3,000-meter race along with junior Sean Flaherty who also grabbed his first collegiate win in the 1,500-meter.

Men's golf team conquers MWC

Five months of practice in Albuquerque's inconsistent weather conditions proved a perfect recipe for the UNM men's golf team which won its first ever Mountain West Conference title in snowy Sunriver, Ore., May 1-3. "Playing in bad weather is not the most fun thing in the world to do," head coach Glen Millican said.

Lobo wins put them in second in MWC

Staff Report The Lobo baseball team wrapped up a sweep of Air Force Sunday, winning 19-6. It was the second weekend in a row that UNM has swept a conference opponent. Last week they beat Utah three-straight to move into a tie for second place in the Mountain West Conference.

Lobos split pair with SDSU

The Lobo softball team used a clutch two-out RBI triple by Stephanie Kennedy and a dominating performance by Amy Dumas on the mound to beat league leading San Diego State 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field. "She has the ability to hit for power," head coach Kim Newbern said of Kennedy.

Athletes of the Week

Michael Letzig of the golf team and softball player Amy Dumas are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Letzig won the MWC Tournament with rounds of 69-72-69-210 and helped propel the Lobos to a conference crown and an automatic bid to regionals.

Men's Tennis The UNM men's tennis team got the word Thursday that three Lobos have been invited to the NCAA tournament. Junior Divan Coetzee has been invited as a singles player while Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland will play as a doubles team. Coetzee will be making his second consecutive appearance in the tournament.

Lobos to enter Twilight track zone

Staff Report The Lobo track team heads south to El Paso for the second time this year to compete in the Miners' UTEP Twilight track meet on Saturday. The meet will mark the end of regular season competition for UNM. The Lobos will face in-state rival, New Mexico State University and a host of unattached athletes.
