Sun Devils burn Lobos in tourney

Subpar scoring and plenty of birdies ruled at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational March 11-12, where the UNM men's golf team could manage only an 8-under-par total - for a disappointing 14th-place finish. With temperatures in the low 90s, little to no wind and a course in perfect condition, low scores were to be expected, Lobo head coach Glen Millican said.

Tennis takes 2nd in conference

Staff Report A 4-3 win over the Air Force Falcons gave the UNM men's tennis team a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference by virtue of a tie-breaker Sunday. The Lobos finished 4-1 in the MWC, which tied them with San Diego State and Brigham Young universities.

Softball team struggles against Utah

UNM, 3, Utah, 7 The UNM softball team looked to improve its conference record with a win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader with the University of Utah Utes at the UNM Softball Complex. Going into Sunday's games, Lobos head coach Kim Newbern felt the two teams were evenly matched, giving UNM a small edge with regards to speed and power.

Lobo baseball tastes victory at home again

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo After a streak of blown leads cost the Lobo baseball team five of its last six games, it was finally UNM's turn to come from behind Sunday at Lobo Field. Timely hitting, key defensive and baserunning plays enabled UNM to pull out a tight 5-4, 10-inning win against the San Diego State Aztecs.

Staff Report The UNM men's mile relay team nearly shocked Louisiana State University at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday. The mile team of Matt Bishop, Chris Garofola, David Lloyd and Nick Lott shattered their previous best time by nearly two seconds at 3:10.

After three narrow losses to Mountain West Conference leader UNLV, followed by another close defeat at the hands of New Mexico State University on Wednesday, the series against the Aztecs is suddenly crucial for a team looking to boost itself back to the top of the MWC.

Softball hits good groove

Ashley Shartzer delivered a clutch two-run homer that sent the UNM softball team to a 4-2 victory over BYU at Lobo Field Thursday. After the Cougars tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, freshman shortstop Ashley VanBoxmeer led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit through the left side of the infield.

Gonzales leads Lobo pack

The Colorado State Rams used a crucial five-run fourth inning to beat the UNM softball team 6-3 in the second game of a doubleheader at Lobo Field Saturday. With UNM leading 1-0, CSU got a leadoff single by Jennifer Mahoney over Lobo shortstop Ashley VanBoxmeer's head to start the fourth.

Women's golf team's young talent on display

The UNM women's golf team held its own at the Ping/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., April 4-6, finishing sixth in a tournament that featured 12 of the top-30 teams in the nation. The 11th-ranked Lobos sat in fifth place after the first round with an 8-over-par 296, but struggled in tough, windy conditions on day two, posting a 17-over 305.

Athletes of the Week

UNM golfers Kailin Downs and Michael Letzig are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Downs finished fourth at the Ping/ASU Invitational with rounds of 71-76-69-216. The sophomore birdied five of the last 10 holes in the final round. Downs is the top-ranked sophomore in the country.

Awards handed out to Lobos

by Rick Bustos Daily Lobo Ruben Douglas received team MVP honors at a banquet for the men's basketball team Tuesday night at the Marriott Pyramid. Douglas led the team and the nation in scoring this year. He also averaged 35 minutes and six rebounds a game.

Staff Report The UNM baseball team added another highlight to its stellar season with an 11-7 win over 7th-ranked Arizona State University Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz. UNM's hitters started the game hot, pummeling ASU starter Beau Vaughan for four runs in the first inning and a total of nine runs through the first four.

Lobos seek to shine at home

The UNM softball team kicks off a nine-game home stand this weekend when it welcomes Colorado State University to Lobo Field after playing 37 of its first 41 games on the road. The Lobos have been road warriors so far this season with a schedule that looks more like that of a 1920s barnstorming team than a college ball club.
