ASUNM voted in favor of a bill Wednesday aimed at increasing voter turnout for its elections, but it didn't pass because four senators weren't at the meeting. The bill proposed to open a polling center in a hallway of Mesa Vista Hall near the ethnic student centers. Nine senators voted in favor of the bill, six senators opposed it and one abstained.

More freshmen were eligible for the Lottery Scholarship this year than ever before at UNM. According to the Office of Institutional Research, 1,951 of 2,603, or 75 percent, of eligible freshmen qualified. The second highest year was 2004, when 71 percent qualified.

I have a suggestion for candidates looking to reach out: Campaign to make textbooks affordable. The average student pays about $400 a semester on textbooks, which is about one month's rent.
