One hundred million years ago, New Mexico lay nameless and borderless and partially submerged beneath sprawling, shallow seas. Dinosaurs of every size and appetite wandered to the edge of such seas, in search of plants, water or smaller creatures further down the food chain. The air above them hung hot and dense, sagging with humidity, and pterosaurs flapped and glided against it.

Editor, Presidential candidate Robert McGrath provided an unacceptable answer to the ethical question asked by a faculty member on Friday: Is it appropriate for UNM to participate in defense research? McGrath's response, according to the Daily Lobo, was that since this research is happening anyway ".

New buildings shouldn't take place of golf course

Editor, I am writing to protest any impending plans to obliterate the UNM North Golf Course and replace it with buildings. Development at the expense of a treasured refuge is unacceptable. The UNM North Golf Course is one of the major assets UNM makes available to the community.

Lobo football to get new practice facility

UNM broke ground Wednesday on a $6.4 million indoor football practice facility. Although the football team can usually practice outside, it's still important to have the option to play indoors, said Paul Krebs, director of athletics.

Art is not a sissy sport

Artist Michael Olivares invented a method to mesh paintings and frames. Olivares, known as Miko, created what he calls gel emulsions by scanning his paintings or drawings onto archival paper. Then, he brushes an acrylic gel medium recipe onto the print and lets it dry for a few days.

Editor, I am writing in response to the letter published Tuesday about the ASUNM Facebook.com group page. As I read the article, I couldn't help but feel responsible for the misunderstanding. The reason I feel responsible is because I was the one who created the page back in 2004.

Provost is a finalist for top job at Hawaii

The University of Hawaii-Manoa named UNM Provost Reed Dasenbrock as a finalist for its vacant chancellor position Feb. 12. Dasenbrock was nominated for the position by a professor at the university. He will visit the university Feb. 26 and 27 to meet with faculty, staff and students. The chancellor functions as a president for that university branch and reports to the president of the University of Hawaii System.

Special UNM Weather Closure Notice -- February 14, 2007 Effective at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, classes at UNM for the remainder of the day, including evening classses, will be canceled. In addition, UNM employees in non-critical areas, unless otherwise specified by their respective supervisors, may also leave for the remainder of the day.

The first installment of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released Feb. 2. Painstakingly assembled and vetted by more than 1,200 scientists and policy experts from 113 countries, it's an 18-page rundown of the meatiest observations, projections and uncertainties in modern climate change science - a preview of the findings of the larger report, which will be hundreds of pages long and released in sections throughout the year.

David Schmidly, the final presidential candidate to visit UNM, met with students, staff and faculty Tuesday. Schmidly has been the president and CEO of the Oklahoma State University System since 2002. The regents will name the president by Feb. 23. Here's a look at each of Schmidly's meetings:

Editor, Last Friday, I was skateboarding past the Duck Pond on the way to learn in Dane Smith Hall when a UNM faculty member entered my path. I called out three times in a row to fellow pedestrians, "I'm coming up on the right." I was, at all costs, trying to prevent an accident.
