Students at a community college in Espa§ola, New Mexico, will be able earn a UNM bachelor's or master's degree this fall through a combination of live, televised and Internet classes. The program is meant to help people become qualified teachers if they cannot or do not want to leave Espa§ola for their education, said Jerry Dominguez, vice president of UNM Extended University.

Rent in the dorms will go up 6.5 percent for the 2005-2006 academic year. Melanie Sparks, director of campus housing, said the rise in rent is because of the 4 percent compensation increase approved by the Board of Regents. She also said the University upgraded electrical lines. "We're trying to keep our expenses at a minimum so rent doesn't have to go up very much," Sparks said.

Editor, As my time at UNM draws to a close, I'd like to reflect on a few key things regarding this University that I feel future and current undergrads could benefit from. Students are on the bottom of the totem pole, and I feel they should be on the top.

Senior Erika Zoller said there's no point in looking for a job in New Mexico when she graduates this month. That is because the job market in New Mexico is less than ideal for recent graduates, she said. "New Mexico is more of a place to retire, not a place to start a career," Zoller said. "We don't have a lot of money in this state, and it's hard to find jobs that aren't dealing with crime or drug abuse."
Graduate Student Chris Holley wants to break down the barrier he says separates artists and observers. Holley produces what he calls relational art. He said relational art differs from traditional art, because the creative input comes from two directions as opposed to one. For example, a person looking at a painting doesn't add anything to it but stands watching passively.
Mike Patterson played his last basketball game for the Lobos in 1976. Now, 29 years later, he's set to receive his degree from UNM - a bachelor of arts in Communication and Journalism. The 6-foot-8-inch former Lobo forward has spent the gap between his college tenures toiling in the car business. He's been his own boss and worked for larger dealerships, making good money and providing for his family.
Between seeing punctured lungs and people paralyzed, it's no wonder UNM pole-vaulting coach Scott Steffan says the sport appeals only to risk takers. Steffan's got two athletes who fit that bill perfectly. Junior Derek Mackel and freshman Whitney Johnson said they pride themselves in being a bit over the edge.
This is a world of waves and I want it no other way. My time in America is over soon, and I must return to my old life, which is sometimes difficult to remember. I have learned many things during my year here - not about fashion at all - but lots of other things, which I do not have a mandate nor a desire to discuss.
