An opportunity lost
Kenn Rodriguez | September 30UNM's football team had the national television spotlight all to itself for the first time in 18 years Friday night- and proved it's not quite ready for prime time. Texas Tech University Heisman-candidate quarterback Kliff Kingsbury picked apart the UNM defense, throwing for 407 yards and six touchdowns in the Red Raiders 49-0 defeat of the Lobos.
Athletes of the Week
September 30Senior volleyball player Vanessa Shields and sophomore cross-country runner Cameron Clarke are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Shields had 26 kills, two assists, eight service aces, eight digs and five blocks in the two victories against New Mexico State University and the Air Force Academy this past week.
Split weekend for UNM soccer teams
September 30Staff Report The UNM men's soccer team lost its first match of the season while the women's team finished with a split on its trip to Alabama. The Lobo women fell 2-0 to 15th ranked Auburn University Friday but managed to rebound Sunday, shutting out Troy State University 9-0.
Women's golf team repeats as champ at McGuire Invitational
September 30Staff Report The University of New Mexico women's golf team pulled off its second consecutive Comcast Dick McGuire Invitational victory on Saturday at the UNM Championship Golf Course. The Lobos led wire to wire posting a final round 302 to hold off a charging University of Washington and Pepperdine University who tied for second place.
Rally advocates human rights

LuceroEmmons | September 30Advocates of human rights and policy reform in Colombia declared during a rally outside the UNM Bookstore Friday that the continued U.S. military presence in Colombia is harming, not helping, its citizens. "Giving military aid to a country in a civil war is like throwing kerosene on a fire," said Francine Cronshaw, founder of the Colombia Solidarity Committee of New Mexico.
Greeks help out at children's hospital
Ryan Floersheim | September 30Members of UNM's Greek community volunteered at Carrie Tingley Hospital Saturday in what has become one fraternity's annual event aimed at helping the UNM community. The second annual Greek Day of Service, sponsored by the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, was founded to give Greeks an opportunity to work together on a major community service project.
Committee asks to raise investment standards
Clay Holtzman | September 30A pair of resolutions petitioning UNM to adopt socially responsible investment standards for its endowment fund now sits before University vice presidents, waiting for approval so it can go before the Board of Regents for review. The Socially Responsible Investment and World Bank Bond Resolutions, which have been approved by just about every major representative body on campus, began when a group of students protested to demand UNM to adopt investment standards regarding social issues.

LETTER: West Nile Virus unlikely to affect UNM students
September 27Editor, While West Nile Virus has been found in several parts of New Mexico, including Bernalillo County, it is not something we should be worried about on campus. This disease, while serious, only seems to infect people more than 50 years old. While there are a number of us in that category, we still don't need to be worried, as mosquitoes aren't a problem on campus.
Richardson dismayed by low turnout
September 27By Ryan Floersheim Daily Lobo Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Richardson once again made a campaign appearance at UNM Thursday, this time to a crowd of about 40 republicans, democrats, students, faculty and area residents. The crowd's size, which Richardson said he expected to be larger, was symptomatic of what he believes to be one of New Mexico's biggest problems - young voter's turnout.

Gas protestors to begin trespassing trial Wednesday
September 27Staff Report Next week will see the opening phases in the trespassing trial of two UNM students and a faculty member who were arrested in April for allegedly chaining themselves to pumps at a Texaco gas station in April. UNM students Jackie Starr and Julie Buckland, along with instructor Bob Anderson have plead not guilty to trespassing charges and will begin their court battle Wednesday, Oct.
Seminars discuss impacts of tourism, on-line conferences
September 27Staff Report Tourism and its ecological impact was the topic of discussion as Ron Mader, an ecological impact specialist and Web host of planeta.com, presented his seminar, "Ecological and Cultural Impacts of Tourism," to students and staff Thursday. The seminar was part of a two-part series hosted by the Anderson Schools of Management.
UNM goes national for match-up versus Tech
