HSC receives award to study bipolar disorder

The University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center has received a nearly $2.4 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to conduct a four-year long bipolar disorder study. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mental illness causing sporadic acute periods of depression and manic according to an HSC press release, and currently around six million Americans are suffering from this condition.

UNM Nursing ranked high in region by online publication

Nursing Schools Almanac recently ranked UNM’s College of Nursing among the very best in the region. Hundreds of nursing schools in the Southwest were ranked by the online publication and, of the schools considered, UNM secured 15th place as the website praised its "innovative education opportunities."

Students react to ABQ's placing as a well-run city

Albuquerque is the 15th-best ran city among 150 of the largest metropolises in the country, according to data gathered from WalletHub, a website which specializes in the gathering of information. Jill Gonzales, an analyst with the site, said for the ranking's methodology, a research team gathers necessary data from mostly government sources. The data is then aggregated to create rankings for each city, based on the methodology WalletHub has elicited in conjunction with academic experts.

ART increases value of properties as fears linger about new line

The announcement of the Albuquerque Rapid Transit has had a lasting effect on the value of city building permits within five-eights of a mile stretching along the proposed ART corridor. Following the initial announcement of the new transit line, residential and commercial building permits were valued at a little more than $23,200 between March 1st, 2015 to July 20th, 2015. This summer, permits value at $28,478,182, amounting to an increase of 12 percent.

Memorial project put on hold due to miscommunication over money

An alumna memorial project at UNM Hodgin Hall's courtyard resulted in what UNM Regent Tom Clifford called an example of "terrible coordination" between the University's Alumni Association and the Board of Regents. The project was proposed to the Board of Regents by the Alumni Association in September of 2015. The regents said the project they approved was a $50,000 maintenance project, but the cost has inflated to a figure between $329,000 and $350,000, a number they said they never saw at the initial presentation.

Student Family Housing targeted for auto burglaries

Since the end of the semester there has been 12 auto burglaries reported to the University of New Mexico’s Police Department at Student Family Housing. As a result, SFH is advising residents to stay cautious and take precautions to keep their belongings and themselves safe. UNMPD Lt. Tim Stump said the stolen items range from cellphones, laptops and backpacks to anything left in a vehicle in plain sight and, unfortunately, sometimes in an unsecured vehicle.

Ludella Awad holds her published book on August 1, 2016. Awad, who is 16-years-old has already published three other books.

Future Lobo publishes second poetry collection

16-year-old Ludella Awad is bringing light to the tragedies in Syria through her second poetry collection. The collection, "Sad Piano Music in Syria," centers on the escalating crisis, which has led to nearly five million refugees leaving the country.

UNM alumna breaks ground at UCLA

Laura Gomez, a native New Mexican and former UNM professor, has been promoted to interim dean of the UCLA College Division of Social Sciences. “I’m really excited about it, it’s a big job,” Gomez said. Gomez will be the first woman to head this division at UCLA.

Community helps ABQ soccer coach recover from devastating injury

 The Albuquerque community has rallied around soccer coach and former UNM athlete Cameron Clarke after he suffered a spinal cord injury in early July. With three children and serious medical expenses to pay, the Clarke family has turned to crowdfunding to offset the cost of treatment and travel expenses so that his family can be with him as he receives care at Craig Hospital in Denver.

UNM tackles statewide childhood well-being problems

New Mexico ranks 49th in childhood well-being, a position that remains unchanged since last year, according to results from the NM Kids are Counting On Us Campaign. The profile is compiled based on the national KIDS COUNT Data Book which organizes data by four domains; Economic Well-Being, Education, Health and Family and Community, which are then broken down into 16 sub-indicators found in local research.

Great spots for students to unwind and cool off during summer

High temperatures keep many students inside during the summer. For those feeling cooped up in their apartment or dorm, there are plenty of places to spend time around UNM and downtown that offer more than just sought-after air conditioning. Businesses around UNM and just down the street are open for students to meet, get a cup of coffee, a bite to eat or unwind from summer studying with a drink.

Process allocating student fees begins this week

The Student Fee Review Board has begun its 2016-17 application process, allowing organizations and resources who serve UNM students to apply for a piece of the student activity fee pie.  Delia Brennan, an undergraduate voting member on the SFRB, said the board allocates millions of dollars in student fees to different units on campus.
