Men's Basketball: Cullen Neal to transfer from UNM

In a season filled with criticism from one segment of the New Mexico fan base, point guard Cullen Neal will transfer from the University, the Athletic Department announced in a email sent Monday morning. The announcement followed a tumultuous run for Neal in his redshirt sophomore campaign.

Possible change in governance has UNM Faculty Senate upset

In a move that surprised members of the UNM Faculty Senate and Health Sciences Center, the Board of Regents announced on Friday a proposal to absorb the HSC Board of Directors, a decision that will be discussed at Monday’s Regents meeting. In addition to relegating the HSC Board of Directors to a committee under the Regents, the proposed change in policy would also demote HSC Chancellor Paul Roth to an executive vice president position that reports to University President Bob Frank.

UNM assistant coach arrested on DWI charge

The last 30 days have not been ideal for amidst New Mexico football's offseason. Towards the end of February, the UNM Police Department excersized a warrant to search the apartment of cornerback Nias Martin for an alleged rape on a 19-year-old UNM student.

ASUNM grapples with spring budget

The Associated Students of UNM struggled this week to allocate funding across campus. The undergraduate student governing body's finance committee spent 17 hours finishing the spring 2016 budget, granting student organizations funding for projects and events, only to have full senate table the budget, and send it back to the committee to reevaluate numbers.

Women's Basketball: Lobos fall to Rams in semi finals; CSU remains unscathed in conference play

Colorado State punched its ticket to the conference championship game after Wednesday’s 60-42 win over New Mexico, potentially the Lobos' final game of the season. The victory solidified the Rams' national ranking as they remain undefeated against Mountain West opponents. The Lobos (17-14) only saw CSU once before Wednesday night’s contest, and the game came down to a final shot which fell to the floor as time expired. The Rams didn’t allow the semi-final round of the Mountain West tournament to be as close of a contest.

Track and Field: Women send record number of athletes to nationals

The New Mexico track and field team set a school record by sending the largest amount of female athletes in its history to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Three individual athletes and a distance medley relay team set the new mark which also extends a record eight consecutive years in which New Mexico has sent at least four athletes to the national championship.

Reputable biology museum houses unique specimens from around the world

A concrete building stands behind a sign that reads “CEIRA”, trees and glass windows adorning it. Through its entrance and down a flight of stairs are secured doors, access through which can only be obtained via key card. Dozens of shelves holding jarred snakes, rodents, fish and insects lay beyond the door. Looking to the second floor, one can see the northern hemisphere’s third largest collection of mammals. Acorns larger then footballs and mushrooms larger than human fists can be found on this level. Underneath its foundation are teams of researchers behind microscopes inspecting parasites from the arctic. A location that is comparable to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Smithsonian has a home in the heart of UNM’s main campus.

Beach Volleyball: Lobos build on last season

Heading into just the second tournament of the season, New Mexico already has as many wins as they did all of last season. In 14 matches during UNM’s inaugural season, the Lobos collected a 3-11 record against tough opponents. Head coach Jeff Nelson said he saw it as a growing experience to start the program off with a competitive edge.

UNM alums share passion for flamenco

By Robert Maler   Five talented local artists, including a University of New Mexico instructor, banded together to present a flamenco performance at a Santa Fe restaurant on Saturday.   Alisa Alba, a UNM dance instructor, was among three flamenco dancers to perform with a flamenco guitarist and vocalist at the El Mesón Restaurant & Tapas Bar in Santa Fe.

HSC subpoenaed over fetal tissue

Students for Life, a pro-life student group at UNM, demanded that UNM Health Sciences Center administration disclose all the relevant information concerning fetal tissue research via subpoena to the Congressional Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives. Students for Life President Sadé Patterson responded in an email statement to HSC employees and stated that HSC Chancellor Paul Roth and the administration “(Have) not provided the Select Panel with the names of faculty or learners who participated in fetal tissue research at this time.”

National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts poetry show to highlight International Women's Day

In honor of International Women’s Day, the National Hispanic Cultural Center hosted Albuquerque’s first International Women’s Day Poetry Show on Tuesday Night. The inaugural event was coordinated and hosted by Liza Wolff-Francis, a poet and member of the Women & Creativity organization. Wolff-Francis said the goal of the event was to bring people together in celebration of International Women’s Day and what it means.

Tennis: Women seek more wins on the road while the men play host to home tourney

The New Mexico women’s tennis team looks to build on its first road victory, while the men’s team stays home to host the Mountain-Pacific Invitational. Women’s head coach Kelcy McKenna said getting the first victory on the road could be a pivotal moment in the team’s current road trip. The Lobos were able to salvage a split by defeating Rice after failing to close out the previous match against Houston.

Public gets chance to voice opinions on ART project

City officials arranged the last of special Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) public meetings at the Kiva Auditorium Tuesday evening to let people ask questions and voice opinions about the project, set to start in a few months. Participants had the opportunity to meet with ART project contractor Bradbury Stamm along with some of the managers associated with the project, while the ART team obtained input from residents and property owners in the area on how ABQ RIDE can mitigate project construction issues, according to a statement issued by city officials.

UNM Police search apartment of Lobo cornerback

The UNM Police Department exercised a warrant to search the Lobo Village apartment of Nias Martin, a junior cornerback for the UNM football team, on February 21. While no charges have yet been filed, an alleged sexual assault and kidnapping incident occurred between Martin and a 19-year-old female student who also attends UNM. The 19-year-old reported the incident on Feb. 20, with her father and sister.

Baseball: Early hole too much for New Mexico bats

New Mexico didn’t get off to the start it wanted on Tuesday, and paid the price despite assembling a late rally. In the bottom of the third, UNM (6-5) found itself in a 7-0 hole to start, something the potent offense could never quite recover from as the squad fell to NMSU 9-6. The contest was played on a neutral site in El Paso, Texas.

Symposium introduces students to nuclear security

The National Security Studies Program began their seventh annual symposium Tuesday with Stanford Professor Siegfried Hecker presenting on North Korea's nuclear capabilities. Hecker said that it is important for people to understand how nuclear power, and the capability of creating nuclear weapons, is uniquely dangerous.
