Offensive columnist lacking etiquette and writing quality

Editor, I was horrified to read Graham Gentz’s review of the play “Painting Churches,” which appeared in the June 30 – July 6, 2014 Lobo. The reader is stricken with the terrible dilemma of deciding which is more offensive: the poor quality of Gentz’s writing or his racist and misogynistic remarks. In describing a leading character: “She has some redeeming moments when she turns the bitch level up to 11 …”

Comic book women are not men's sexual objects

I went to the Albuquerque Comic Expo recently, and I was utterly dismayed by what I saw. I was introduced to the worlds of “The Fantastic Four” and “the Avengers” when I was only a tiny child, moving with my family from state to state every few years. My father, as a young boy in the ‘60s, read the genesis of Spider-Man, Thor and Daredevil. So when he had boys of his own, he would take my older brother and I to comic book shops no matter where we lived to buy what few comics we could scrounge from bargain bins selling them three for a dollar.

Music Review: Little Daylight's album catchy, but doesn't excite

Electronic vibes channeled straight from the ‘80s find a fresh revival with Little Daylight’s first full-length release, aptly titled “Hello Memory.” The hooks on some of the tracks of this album are intriguingly misleading. The well-produced album has quite a few things going for it: quality musicians, hooks and beats that curl in close to the listener and a vocalist whose control and range hints at a lot of undiscovered talent.

The University of New Mexico did not make the short list in a recent Huffington Post and Activetimes.com study of the most physically fit universities, but if student participation in events such as Saturday’s bodybuilding competition is any indication, UNM is moving in the right direction.

Try tempura to add some pep to veggies

With so many vegetables in season, now is a great time to experiment with tempura. Tempura is an old Japanese method of battering and quickly deep frying foods. This dish was actually brought to Japan by the Portuguese in the 16th century, but it has long been associated with Japanese cuisine. Since the frying time is so short, and the batter is quite thin, this method of frying foods adds far less fat than traditional western breading or batter.

Attorney: Was rape accusation racist?

Videos shown by an attorney to several media outlets may suggest that a woman who accused two UNM football players and a CNM student of raping her may have been the sexual aggressor. On Tuesday, attorney George Anthony Bleus played the videos after rape charges against UNM running back Crusoe Gongbay and CNM student Ryan Ruff were dropped by the District Attorney’s office.

Professional Science program put on hold

The Professional Science master’s degree program has seen its federal funding dry up and its existence put on hold, but hopes remain that the future might bring reinstitution as a University program with University funding. Dr. Kevin Malloy, director of the PSM program during its existence, said the program operated for five years on National Science Foundation funding in the form of fellowships covering full expenses of education for students during their time in the program.

Dull play irritating and lacking harmony

“Painting Churches” as presented by The Adobe Theater is an abysmal experience once the paint has been stripped from its facade. It’s difficult to know where to start. I suppose the best place is with the abhorrent characters and their petty lives.
