GPSA: Bursar website unclear

When Priscila Poliana assumed the presidency of UNM’s graduate and professional student government in May, she already knew she wanted to do something about the website of the bursar’s office. At a GPSA meeting Saturday morning, Poliana outlined issues with the site and reported on the progress she had made with the University administration to fix them.

Car theft down on campus

Keeping up with yearly fluctuations in numbers, the number of motor vehicle thefts and burglaries reported in 2012 has changed yet again. According to the UNM Annual Security and Fire Safety Report released by UNM’s Police Department last week, there were 38 reported cases of motor vehicle theft in calendar year 2012.

Win on yards, loss on points

The New Mexico football team’s offense came to play against UNLV on Saturday, but the defense was nowhere to be found. UNM (1-3) had three rushers go over the century mark for the first time in school history in quarterback Cole Gautsche, running back Kasey Carrier and wide receiver Carlos Wiggins.

Men drop another home soccer game, women snap skid

He wasn’t speechless after Friday night’s nonconference finale against Davis, but New Mexico men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein found the Lobos’ third straight home loss difficult to explain. UNM, which begins its first Conference USA contest Monday at Marshall, surrendered a goal late in the second half in 2-1 loss to UC Davis.

Those nice women in purple who have been injecting anti-flu vaccines in students’ arms are not just doing it for fun. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, flu season can start as early as October.

Planners pleased as punch about Homecoming

Gold and silver stars made of metallic paper twinkled near the ceiling of the SUB Atrium as UNM kicked off Homecoming Week on Monday. The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico’s Lobo Spirit Committee planned the annual weeklong fete.

UNM student Tanley McMullan spent the past week tending to buckets of mealworms in her living room, taking her duck Daisy for leashed walks and campaigning for UNM’s homecoming queen. “It’s just so fun,” she said. “It’s fun, fun, fun.”

The early success that the New Mexico volleyball team has experienced can be attributed to the team as a whole even when star players have rocky nights. The Lobos (10-1) have been winning tough games by relying on the depth of their team to pick up the slack when individual players are having off nights.

UNM Crime Briefs

On Sept. 13, UNMPD received a call from a woman who lives near the UNM area about a black sport utility vehicle “driving erratically” on the grass west of Ortega Hall. According to the police report, the woman saw the van hit an “unknown fixed object.”
