Athletics to cut back expenses next year

UNM's Athletics Department said it is trying to keep a high standard of performance while dealing with the impact of the economy. Paul Krebs, vice president of Athletics, said most sports at UNM will absorb a 10 percent budget cut for the next fiscal year, with each team responsible for shrinking its expenses.

The 2009 season's key NFL matchups

Godlike NFL figure Vince Lombardi sent his Moses, Bill Walsh, down this past Tuesday and handed the American sporting community his equivalent of the Ten Commandments. It's called the 2009 NFL regular-season schedule. The schedule, which was announced on April 14, couldn't have come at a better time.


Lead-off batter Mike Brownstein, seen rounding the bases, will have to deal with 100 mph pitches from SDSU's Stephen Strasburg on Friday at Isotopes Park. The consensus is that Strasburg will be the first overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft.

SDSU pitcher to challenge Lobos' lineup

Murderers Row, meet Stephen Strasburg. San Diego State's right-handed pitcher will face the Lobos' batting lineup today. Strasburg has been portrayed as something of an urban legend, a pitcher harkening back to a story Sports Illustrated concocted about a hard-throwing ace named Sidd Finch, whose fastball whizzed by at 168 mph.

Protesters denounce big bank bailouts

About 2,500 people gathered at the intersection of Montgomery and Louisiana boulevards on Wednesday to protest the deficit the government has created by bailing out the banking industry. They brought tea bags, homemade signs, American flags and cans of pork and beans to the metaphorical tea party - one of many hosted in cities across the country.

For the sake of laughter

Forced laughter leads to real laughter. "Even if you start out fake laughing, because you're in a group, pretty soon that gets funny, and then, you start out really laughing," Laugh Club founder Danny Birdsell said. "Also, (Madan Kataria) from India, he was saying that it doesn't even matter if you're fake laughing.

Editor, It is disappointing when reading opinions from people who are either misinformed or so blatantly biased that they fail to acknowledge another's point of view. An opinion article from two weeks ago was a perfect example of why there has been so much mistrust and finger-pointing at our University.

Muslim group's event aims to dispel stereotypes

Students came out in waves to eat snow cones, play inflatable games and talk about religion during an "EidRagious" celebration on Wednesday. The Muslim Student Association hosted the event on the east side of the SUB as part of Islamic Awareness Week. Soha Abdalla, secretary of the MSA, stood at a table with pamphlets and translated copies of the Quran, urging passersby to take part in the event.

Now, it is time to get to work. April 8-10 Three cars were keyed on campus this week. Two were in the UNMH parking structure; the other was in the Redondo Village parking lot, east of the police station. April 8 A UNM Police officer was dispatched to Sigma Chi N.E. in response to a vehicle fire, which UNMPD ruled to be arson.

If foot pain or stinky feet are a problem, members of the Tea Lover's Social Group say the cure may be soaking your feet in Earl Grey tea. Founder Angela Fioravantes said at the New Mexico Tea Company she heard about the healing benefits of Earl Grey tea on foot pain.

Comedian's documentary a healthy response to 'Super Size Me'

Comedian and health writer Tom Naughton made "Fat Head" to debunk what he claims to be myths propagated by the film "Super Size Me." "I was offended by two things: One, the premise (that) it's McDonald's fault people are getting fatter," he said. "I was also offended, as a computer programmer, that his math doesn't add up.

ASUNM needs better way to communicate with students

Editor, One problem I have with ASUNM and the student elections at UNM is the profound lack of relevant information about the political issues at hand and the student candidates themselves. I would like to think that I keep myself pretty well-informed about the issues that affect my University and the systems that make it work.

Lobos Unidos takes 9 of 15 seats in ASUNM election

The ASUNM slate Lobos Unidos won nine of 15 slots in the Spring Election, according to results released Wednesday. Presidential candidate Monika Roberts took 54 percent of the vote over her opponent, Lobos Unidos candidate Brian Moore. Roberts will take the helm from current ASUNM President Ashley Fate in May.

UNM budgets $800K for faculty hires

The University has budgeted for adding seven or eight faculty positions in the coming year and for promoting some faculty members. Curtis Porter, associate vice president for Budget, Planning & Analysis, said an estimated $800,000 in instructional funds is available to create the positions, and some of the money was also allocated to hiring more advisers, graduate assistants and teaching assistants.
