Don't judge based on race; vote with an open mind

Editor, I discovered years ago that we all carry some degree of prejudice within us. We all have something inside we don't want to face. Let's consider skin tones. Somewhere along the way, the color of skin became a social construct, and the light-skinned people decided they were somehow better than darker-skinned people.

UNM struggles to keep focus in doubleheader

After two wins last week, the UNM softball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico University, 9-8 and 16-8. Head coach Ty Singleton said the Lobos needed to come out like they did last week in wins against West Texas A&M.

UNM No. 76 in nation for sexual health resources

According to a survey, UNM's sexual health is better than NMSU's, but there is still room for improvement. The 2008 Trojan Sexual Health Report Card ranked UNM's Student Health and Counseling center No. 76 of 139 universities nationwide. The annual report card measures universities' availability of sexual health resources and accessibility of sexual health-related information.

Discussion addresses U.S. financial crisis

About 160 students and faculty attended a roundtable discussion in Dane Smith Hall on Friday to discuss the country's financial crisis. The event began just a few hours after The House of Representatives voted 263 to 171 to pass the $700 billion bailout bill, which was later signed into law by President Bush.

Kicker earns his place outside the limelight

James Aho, by all definitions, fits the quaint, stereotypical mold of a kicker. He is reserved and reluctant to talk - to the point that one of Aho's teammates playfully volunteered to speak on his behalf. "I told you guys to block me off," Aho said, jaw-jabbing at his lockermates for pointing him out.

Lack of energy a factor in loss to Utah

After one of its biggest wins of the season, the UNM volleyball team ran into a roadblock Saturday. Displaying little of the energy they showed in Thursday's sweep of No. 21 BYU, the Lobos were defeated 3-1 by Utah on Saturday. The loss puts the Lobos at 13-3 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference.

iTunes cards not meant to be a reward for registering to vote

Editor, In a Daily Lobo article about College Democrats' distribution of iTunes cards published Sept. 29, I was quoted saying "All the student has to do is register to vote to activate the card." This statement was inaccurate. I, in no way, meant to suggest that anyone will be rewarded or given incentive to register to vote as the article seems to suggest and apologize for my misstatement.

Recovering teams place 8th, 9th at invitational

After the flu plagued last week's meet in Minneapolis, Minn., the UNM men's and women's cross country teams took eighth and ninth place in the Notre Dame Invitational on only six days' rest. Florida State University swept the field in South Bend, Ind., winning the men's and women's tournaments.

Former Republican chair has distorted view of Hispanics

Editor, With regard to the recent controversy over Fernando C de Baca's racist comments on Hispanics not supporting an African-American person for president, it is obvious that C de Baca considers himself a white Hispanic and appears to be making the assumption that all Hispanics in New Mexico are white as well.

Out-of-state student? Vote absentee

Out-of-state students may not be able to vote if they don't apply for an absentee ballot from their home state this month. If students register before then, they will be able to receive their absentee ballots in time to send them in and have their votes counted.

Study groups in libraries should not distract others

Editor, I am sick and tired of people wandering into the main reading room of Zimmerman Library for group study sessions, or worse, sitting and carrying out meaningless banter while I try to study or write. What is the first thing any elementary school student learns when she first enters a library? Libraries are quiet places.

Group works to fight hunger, homelessness

UNMPIRG is asking for monetary donations to give to an Albuquerque food bank. The program, called Spare Change for Social Change, began this fall and has raised more than $400 for Project Share. The food bank is a New Mexico-based nonprofit and provides meals to about 145,000 people each year, said Patsy Kelton-Born, executive director of Project Share.

UNM sweeps No. 21 BYU after returning from road

UNM made its homecoming in style Thursday with a 3-0 win over BYU in Mountain West Conference volleyball action. After being away from Johnson Gym for more than a month, the Lobos swept the 21st-ranked Cougars 25-22, 25-19, 25-17. "We executed our game plan and moved the ball around well," head coach Jeff Nelson said.

UNM improves sustainability standing

Students worry about grades, but they may not realize the University is worried about its own report card. UNM, along with other universities in the U.S. and Canada, is graded by the College Sustainability Report Card. This year, in the Mountain West Conference, UNM came in fourth place out of nine schools, with an overall B in sustainability - an improvement from last year's C.

Mitchell Hall will be closed for renovations

Don't plan on taking any classes in Mitchell Hall this spring. The building will close for renovations in January and won't reopen until the end of the fall 2009 semester. Melissa Vargas, strategic planner for the Provost's Office, said millions of University dollars will be spent on modernizing Mitchell Hall for students and faculty.
