Beige US food baffles British student

I think it is fair to say there’s no country quite as fanatical about food as America. The Spanish may be pious about their paella, and the Italians are mad for their marinara, but Americans have taken food to a whole new level.

Regent sheds light, urges input

An assortment of opinions about the Board of Regents exists within our University community — positive and negative, informed and unfamiliar alike.

Civility in grad school beats the odds

Despite the fact that graduate students are in competition with each other, and despite the fact that funding sources at the public level are disappearing, in some departments a curious phenomenon occurs: We manage to be courteous, kind and helpful to one another.

The death of an abandoned kitten

Late last night on Broadway Boulevard I drove past a kitten laying in the road. Road kill of any kind makes me queasy, but this time I didn’t see any blood and the kitten wasn’t obviously squashed. I pulled over and went to investigate.

New dorms for a commuter campus?

I recently read a Daily Lobo article about the possibility of constructing new student housing at UNM and, like always, this article reinforced my belief that the current administration is wholly incompetent and, hey, also shows contempt for the student population.

Protests promote necessary tension

I applaud the idealistic kids taking part in the “Occupy ABQ” movement, and I stand with them in their efforts to create a more equitable future for everyone. The complaints that they lack cohesiveness or any specific agenda are utterly irrelevant.

Social issues for protest often distorted

I would like to offer some reasons for why I support the Occupy Albuquerque and Occupy Wall Street protesters across the country, and why I would like to see everyone in this community support them financially and thank them. I hope the movement grows and strengthens. Wall Street and corporate America, as has been reported many times, are rolling in money.

Political pessimism makes little sense

Spend time in any online chat room or try to have a conversation about social change and a common trait of our species becomes evident. Pessimistic comments on our shared political and economic disaster dominate the interaction: nothing can change, we’re headed inevitably toward some sort of corporate state, welcome to the machine, resistance is useless, the list goes on. People get on their soapboxes at that point to tell everyone they saw it coming.

Assisted goal adds to conference record

Saturday night may have been windy and chilly, but the UNM women’s soccer team fought through it and beat UNLV 1-0. Senior Jennifer Williams got to celebrate her birthday Saturday by scoring the only goal of the night in the 10th minute.

Smarter tactics lead to wins

The UNM men’s soccer team is once again among the nation’s elite programs. In the last few years, the Lobos have had some great team lineups but have not lived up to their hype.

Buying sex not always dirty, wrong

Prostitution and New Mexico have shared some headline space recently. The most notable cases include the 2009 West Mesa murders, ex-UNM President F. Chris Garcia’s arrest in July on suspicions of involvement with the online prostitution ring Southwest Companions, and Judge Albert Murdoch’s arrest, also in July, on suspicion of raping a prostitute and intimidating a witness.

Internet hackers effect real-life change

The Internet, despite the vague conception that events on it do not affect real life, has taken on an influence in political life which is unmistakable, and defies continued attempts to relegate interactions on social media to triviality. The events now called “Arab Spring” — the protests in Egypt, Libya and the Middle East — have proven that social media has started to play a central role in political protest, organization and motivation.

Removing racism requires cooperation

Racism is a touchy issue for most people. Even in this day and age, talk of racial inequality in America makes people very uncomfortable — but it‘s a fact. Racism is deeply rooted in our society and always has been.
