Band's bizarre style doesn't fit any genre

Ezra Buchla and Ericka Anderson made out in a bush and then started a band. The Gowns, a trio from the Oakland-Bay area, played at a house at 1400 Wilmoore Drive S.E. on Monday as part of their tour across the U.S.

Band mixes Christ with rock

The band Someday proves Christian hardcore isn't clean, wholesome fun. "I'm really sweaty and gross, so that means it was a good show," singer and guitarist Chris Rose said after the band's show Sunday at the Launchpad.

Violent sequel sets the standard for video games

Every console generation has a game that will forever define how that console will be remembered when it is finally eclipsed by its successor. The original Nintendo had "Super Mario Bros. 3." Super Nintendo had "Chrono Trigger." The PlayStation peaked early with "Final Fantasy VII." And finally, the PlayStation 2 has its defining moment in "God of War II." One might even say "God of War II" is the defining moment of video games overall.

Artist's ink murals showcase urban life

Looking at a James Black mural is like walking through a crowded Downtown Albuquerque street. Faces scrawled in black on clean, white walls look at you from a thousand perspectives, each one an improvised portrait of urban life in Albuquerque. Smeared strokes and dripping ink give the exhibition an aesthetic that only a longtime graffiti writer can bring to a gallery.

Waking Ashland The Well Available April 17 We all know about rock 'n' roll, punk rock, grunge rock and indie rock, but is there really such a thing as piano rock? Stepping up to the mic

Skull Control Records is not a typical record label. "My brother and I started it," MC Illson Serif said. "It's ours as a whole with everyone else (on the label), because we aren't anything without them. It's definitely not a one-sided thing. Everyone is not signing some major contract and that type of stuff."

Female artists featured in exhibit

"Eye to I," an exhibit of female artists' works, fulfills the viewer like a hearty three-course dinner. The women use the concept of self-portraiture to define and disassemble themselves. They span their flaws and perfections, embrace or challenge their gender, explore their sexual roles within their cultures and remark upon the absurdity of it all.

Panaderia bakes Mexican favorites

Long before Dunkin' Donuts and Little Debbie, Latino families were perfecting the art of making pastries. Flour, eggs and heaps of sugar were whipped together to produce breads, cookies and cakes - confections to complement a morning cup of cafe con crema or an afternoon snack.

Taking the cockroach approach

La Cucaracha Stew Co. is out to prove that politics is not just about speeches and fliers. "Our whole idea is to be a guerrilla theater kind of thing that can go to a protest and do an image that knocks into everybody's head what we are trying to say, without even saying anything," member Billah Muhammad said. "They know what it is. They know what we are doing. We don't even have to say anything."

Serendipity and meat make a musical mix

It took a little serendipity to create Meat the Vegans. The band, who took first place at ASUNM's Battle of the Bands in February, came together in June when Seth Hoffman and Jacob Lowery, formerly of the band Seth and Jacob, ran into some bad luck.

Spring break: a time to change routines

The world is a colorful place. Some say the days grow shorter as we age. This happens because we get stuck in routine schedules and ways of thinking and acting. Differentiating between the days becomes difficult. There are small things we can do to enhance our quality of life. Spring break is a good time to take a load off and examine all the possibilities.
