A rational approach to abortion

In order to understand the ethics surrounding the abortion issue, there are two central questions which are determinative: (1) Do human beings possess intrinsic value? (2) Is the developing fetus a human being?

Abortion ban does not diminish women’s rights

Editor, Speaking for the body of pro-lifers, we do not condemn nor hate women who have abortions or who believe in abortion. I am a woman, among many, who fights for the right that born and unborn human beings have to life.

Reader wants empathy for fetuses, not moms

Editor, And so yet another letter from a “pro-choice” person, Kendall Lovely, which completely ignores the people who have no choice in the abortion debate – the 5-month-old fetuses who have brains, hearts and the ability to hear their mothers’ voices and heartbeats.

Don’t trust health studies whose science is for sale

Editor, Whoever pays the fiddler usually calls the tune. When a “scientific” study comes out saying that coffee is not harmful, always ask who paid for that study. Follow the money trail. If anyone who makes money off coffee helped pay for that study, do not swallow the claimed results as truth.

Regardless of my body’s age, my mind is timeless

Editor, When I am asked how old I am, the answer I prefer to give is that I do not know. The reason I prefer that answer is because I know that I am not my physical body, but something other than my physical body that entered what became my physical body at what we refer to as “conception.”

Men need to vote no on abortion measure

Editor, There’s this idea that “pro-choice” is equivalent to “pro-abortion.” As if women think to themselves, “Oh, absolutely, I love invasive surgical procedures that might also make me sad.” Yeah, that’s not how this works.

Don’t just watch it on TV, live your own life

Editor, As a farm boy teenager in Illinois, I was addicted to television. I foolishly wasted hundreds of precious hours and I poisoned my mind watching violent programs. But I have owned no TV in Albuquerque since I first moved here 43 years ago. We can wake up, we can wise up, we can change.

Americans oblivious to world around them

Editor, I’m an exchange student from Italy. During my stay in New Mexico I’m trying to use this opportunity to figure out how Americans act in everyday life, as opposed to stereotypes and what comes from movies and broadcasting.

Higher requirements for scholarship is inequality

Editor, I am a student who, with the increase of the Bridge to Success Scholarship standards of a 3.0 GPA and a 23 ACT score, would have still been able to get the scholarship, and I write to tell you that not all of us are made equal.

The social contract does not exclude the unborn

Editor, You must wear a seatbelt. You must stop at a red light. You can’t drink alcohol and drive. You can’t talk on your cell phone and drive at the same time without a hands-free device. You must be 21 years old to drink alcohol.

Doctor’s stance ignores the baby’s perspective

Editor, Dr. Sandra Penn’s letter, “Vote ‘no’ on abortion restriction measure” found in Wednesday’s Daily Lobo, is nothing more than an attempt at the continued promulgation of genocide, dressing it up in the guise of “scientific detachment.”

Health care web site snafu hardly the first

Editor, Almost always when something new is undertaken, such as the Healthcare.gov website, there are unanticipated problems that require more time and effort than was initially scheduled. Here are two examples that occurred in my life.

Vote ‘no’ on abortion restriction measure

Editor, My life has been dedicated to the practice of medicine and working to ensure the health of my community. I have been a physician since 1978, completing my residency in 1981 at Bernalillo County Medical Center, now University of New Mexico Hospital.

Regulation the cause of stagnant economies

Editor, In his column on Monday, Joe Wagner stands courageously on his moral high ground, criticizes name calling, and declares he won’t be “bullied into compliance with… boogey-man idioms.”

The Setonian
Opinion

Entitlements not rights, do not grow on trees

Editor, In Joe Wagner’s column, printed in Monday’s Daily Lobo, the author’s gratuitous use of the word “one” left me wondering which “one” he was talking about. Also, the author has another troubling, but expected issue: the meaning of redistribution of wealth.

Sex is ethical, rape and war are hideous

Editor, No matter how long since I have had sex with anyone, no matter how horny I am, I have no right to rape anyone ever. It is far better for me never to have sex with anyone for the rest of my life than for me to force anyone to have sex with me.

Lottery Scholarship change helpful, not discriminatory

Editor, As a graduate of the University of New Mexico, I feel impelled to write my feelings regarding the Bridge to Success Scholarship, whose prospective changes are being challenged by some within and outside the University community.

Progressives to blame for America’s paralysis

Editor, I agree with Jason Darensburg that Americans should seek out other countries to live in, I know I am. The primary reason is because of the complete infection of progressivism that has paralyzed this country.

Flawed parents at fault for kids’ problems

Editor, Many adults get rich off poisoning kids’ bodies and minds. Many churchgoers are horrified when kids kill kids and old people, but these are the same churchgoers who have no conscience against paying Uncle Sam tax dollars to kill kids and old people in other nations.
