Voter identification law just as bad as poll tax

Editor, I recently came across a column written in the Daily Lobo by guest columnist Dayona Dodd on Aug. 21 and was baffled. I cite particularly the statement “People who are not legal American citizens should not be able to vote in elections;

MLK spoke out against war, not just racism

Editor, The prophet Martin Luther King, Jr. refused to castrate truth into safe generalities. The FBI hounded, harassed and persecuted him because he made truth specific. He damned the Vietnam War, nuclear weapons and the evils of U.S. imperialism and capitalism.

Bombs kill the innocent, not just the fighters

Editor, I am thinking of the people of Syria. I am thinking of the mother, caressing the cheek of her infant as she drifts off to sleep. I am thinking of the father, laughing as he carries his son on his shoulders.

You can catch more flies with honey...

Editor, Although I am not inclined to give up eating meat at this time, I do appreciate what PETA2 is doing in order to raise my awareness level and educate me about the treatment of some farm animals.

Obama’s Syria threats will embroil US in war

Editor, Recently President Obama gave a speech saying that he will consult with Congress before launching a military strike against the Syrian regime. This was followed by a candid statement claiming that he does not need any lawmaker’s permission to do so.

Show balance when reporting brash charges

Editor, Regarding the Daily Lobo’s Sept. 3 coverage of activists protesting the administration’s proposed military intervention into Syria, I had a few concerns with this piece that I feel must be voiced.

Recording ethnicity can help lessen hate crimes

Editor, Thanks for reporting the hate letter on the car and the earlier writing of “Sand-N*gger” on the same victim’s door at the SRCs on campus in last Wednesday’s Daily Lobo, but I noticed you did not include the race/ethnicity/religion of the victim.

Take care, lest ye be crushed by the candy

Editor, If I were to tell you, dear reader, that you may carry a siren of moral turpitude and a harbinger of impending doom in your pocket, and worse yet, that you engage with its glacé contours as joyfully as you would a beloved novel or film, would you take heed?

Nudity is natural and can save electricity

Editor, I love living naked at home and nearly naked elsewhere, when I am warm enough. My naked, lean, healthy, well-tanned body is my favorite suit. Living naked connects me to the earth.

Unborn children have same human rights

A classic definition of law was given by Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century.  He defined law as: “A command of reason, promulgated by legitimate authority, for the sake of the common good.”

Teachers are the solution, not the problem

Editor, Thanks to Jamillah Wilcox for her fine article (in the July 22-July 29 issue of the Daily Lobo) reporting on the attack on public education by representatives of the private sector at the recent meeting of the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee in the SUB, of all places.

Don’t work for makers of ‘hell-on-earth weapons’

Editor, 68 years ago this month, the United States atom bombed Hiroshima, Japan. The U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 murdered 166,000 people — over 50 times the number of people murdered in New York City and Washington D.C. on 9/11.

‘Loathsome’ Snowden should be punished

Edward Snowden is not a human rights activist. He is a loathsome and abominable traitor and spy. He stated his aim was to inform the world about the surveillance programs operated by the NSA.

Objectively, one party stands out as noxious

Editor, I am an objective observer of what transpires in Washington, D.C. From my perspective as a member of no political party, it seems to me that the majority of one of our two primary political parties has opinions such as the following:
