Building to foster community

You don't need to major in engineering to take advantage of the Centennial Engineering Center when it opens next year. "The University is investing in ... not just engineering - engineering plus all interdisciplinary programs, which we have with every other college," said Joseph Cecchi, dean of the engineering school.

Services aim to make campus bicycle-friendly

If you catch Tour de France fever, riding your bicycle to campus may be the cure. UNM offers services to encourage students to choose biking over driving, said Cynthia Martin, program planning manager for Parking and Transportation Services.

Within New Mexico's 121,365 square miles, you could fit more than 78 Rhode Islands, 62 Delawares, 21 Connecticuts or 13 New Jerseys. All of America's 10 smallest states could fit inside New Mexico's borders with room to spare, as could all five states of New England.

Geeks go to Burt's to think and drink

Albuquerque geeks will soon have a place to spend their Monday nights. Burt's Tiki Lounge, at 313 Gold Ave. S.W., will introduce Geeks Who Drink on Aug. 6. The event will be hosted by Eric Kohen, also known as Quizmaster Eric the Jewish Viking.

UNMPD: Suspected bike thief arrested

Staff Report For now, it's safer to park your bicycle on campus than it was last semester. UNM Police arrested a man believed to be responsible for most of the bicycle thefts at the University, said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for the department. "This is a suspect that has a large criminal history of larceny," he said.

Burlesque troupe revamps art form

There's more to burlesque than what meets - or doesn't meet - the eye. The members of Burlesque Noir, a self-described neo-burlesque troupe, practice for about six hours each week, said Holly Rebelle, the troupe's founder. And the rehearsal has clearly had an effect on Burlesque Noir's artistic evolution.

Paramedics take to the skies

Most people get on an airplane once or twice a year. Usually, it's to visit friends and relatives or take a vacation. However, the staff of UNM Hospital's Lifeguard is expected to fly every day.

The Internet is the best place to start looking for scholarships. The Financial Aid Office lists scholarships that are available through UNM at its Web site, Unm.edu/~finaid. The Web site also has links to search engines where students can enter their information and search for national scholarships.

In college, Schmidly did enough to get by

UNM President David Schmidly didn't know what he wanted to do when he started college in the early '60s. "I was interested in basketball and girls," he said. "Academics was the last thing on my list of priorities." Schmidly started his tenure as the University's 20th president on June 1.

Recruiting top priority for track

With a new coach comes a new system, and with a new system comes new recruiting ideas. But UNM track and field and cross country head coach Joe Franklin said that even though it's a new system, the program will continue to pursue local athletes.

Bringing the howl back to The Pit

The UNM men's basketball program is beginning a new era after one of the most difficult years in its history. After the Lobos' second losing season in 24 years, Steve Alford was hired to replace Ritchie Mckay in order to bring the howl back to The Pit.
