Cryptic video may point to UFO crash in White Sands

by Mike Smith Daily Lobo It was October of '97, and the second annual Australian International UFO Symposium had just gotten underway in the eastern Australia city of Brisbane. Writers gave lectures on the latest extraterrestrial news and theories, various groups manned booths to help counsel alleged former abductees, and the organizers of the symposium presented what they suggested was the first ever filmed crash of a UFO.

Being an Internet celebrity sometimes leads to greater things. Three friends from Berkeley, Calif., formed a comedy trio in 2001 called the Lonely Island, making short films and posting them on YouTube. The comedy shorts got so popular that Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer had the chance to audition for "Saturday Night Live." They are now on the cast.

Dancers ready to take the lead

If you're a good dancer, you're good in relationships, said to Millie Leahy, a UNM dance instructor. "The skills it takes to partnership dance are the same skills it takes to have a relationship," she said. "At any given moment, you can only have a leader and a follower. You can't have two leaders at the same moment, for the same reason they don't have two steering wheels in the car."

Finding salvation, peace through art

When artist Paul Bartlett RÇ graduated from Cal Tech with a degree in physics, he decided to express the beauty of science through art. "On the outside, the transition from science to art was a dramatic transition," he said. "Internally, there is a great similarity - at least with the work I do. It was a fairly smooth progression internally."

Greek life provides more than just a place to live

Editor, I agree with Director of Residence Life Randy Boeglin that living on campus is an experience you will never forget. Residing on campus is beneficial to one's academics and social life. While the dorms do offer great amenities, there are other options for living on campus.

UNM's carelessness puts employees at risk for fraud

Your guide to housing

A backyard, a porch and your own bathroom might seem like good reasons to rent a house. But students first need to know their rights as tenants, said James Chavez, a real estate attorney. "What you want to do is treat it like a business arrangement," he said. "Everything should be in writing." Chavez said most landlords are decent business people, but when tenants aren't familiar with the New Mexico Owner-Resident Relations Act, they can be caught off guard. It's important to understand the lease and what it requires, Chavez said.

Problematic receiver could be a blessing for Pats

by Adrian Doerfler Daily Lobo Now that the inexact science of the NFL Draft is over, football fans get to see if their team's selections will turn out to be the next late-round franchise savior, such as Tom Brady, or the next first-round bust, such as the infamous Ryan Leaf - who is now a golf instructor.

Conservatives can't gripe about underrepresentation

Editor, Monday's letter by Larry H. Crum and Paul Chacho is further evidence of the persecution complex shared by many American conservatives. For people whose views have been enacted in official policy for six years with catastrophic results, it is distressing that they should complain so fervently about being underrepresented.

Students can save money with generic birth control

Editor, Caleb Fort's article in Thursday's Daily Lobo about our student affiliate, Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Justice, and their work to assist low-income students with the cost of contraception is a little bit unclear. The article states that the discounted Ortho Tri-Cyclen costs $15 a month and the generic replacement costs $24.

Past six years have shown how inept Republicans are

Editor, In a letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, Larry H. Raiders need more than star QB to save their game

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo If the top five players picked in the NFL Draft are any indication of things to come, it should be an interesting season. As everyone expected, the Oakland Raiders went for a quarterback and selected LSU's JaMarcus Russell. Russell is probably the best quarterback of the class, but he is no savior for the Raiders' offense.
