Promising artist plays soul music

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo The world of soul music is in peril these days. Blame MTV for the pretty boy singers who dominate the pop charts, singing about nothing more than how good they look and how every girl wants them. Gone are the days of the young Al Green and Marvin Gaye, where the songs are about the sincerity of love as well as the sting of heartbreak.

Newbie makes his mark

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Freshman Daniel Faris couldn't have picked a better time to chip in the first points of his Lobo career. Or play tough defense against two seven-footers. Or toss an elbow or two to show he wasn't backing down. The 6-foot-9-inch Faris, the tallest person on the Lobos other than 6-9 David Chiotti, was called on to try to shut down Colorado State's sophomore twin towers Stuart Creason and Jason Smith in UNM's 83-75 win against the Rams on Saturday night. Right from the start, Faris let Creason know that, freshman or not, he'll battle just the same.

Latifah shines in 'Last Holiday'

by Ali Patterson Daily Lobo I tried. I really tried. As much as I hate Queen Latifah in her Wal-Mart commercials, I just couldn't hate her in "Last Holiday," her latest movie in theaters Jan.

Rowland comes in second for trophy

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Coming in second this time didn't bother Jeff Rowland at all. The senior UNM men's soccer player was runner-up for the Hermann Trophy Award given to the nation's top college soccer player on Friday at the Missouri Athletic Club in St.

Letter: Richardson shifting N.M.'s resources to the wealthy

Editor, My gas bill just jumped to nearly $300, an outrageous cost for a little heat. It is clear Gov. Richardson's fuel rebate was a publicity stunt in the horrible disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and now we are faced with the real bills. I hope the next legislative session rejects Richardson's giveaway of $100 million of our tax money to a wealthy tycoon for a spaceport.

Hardworking songwriter to play at KiMo

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo At art galleries, it isn't uncommon to hear couples hinge the purchase of a painting on whether it will match the drapes in their summer home. These discussions highlight the subtle distinction between art and decoration.

Letter: Whisked away by the cozy sounds of a sousaphone?

Editor, Thank you, Debra Au, for a great review of Mac M's CD, Get Your Big Leg Down. I know Martin, and he is a fantastic musician. He even works at UNM, which shows that real people do exist and work here. I have a feeling, though, that one little item was not exactly what you meant.

UNM shears Rams 83-75

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Ritchie McKay wasn't sure why the UNM men's basketball team shot a season-high field-goal percentage in the Lobos' 83-75 win over Colorado State on Saturday night. It could have been that the Lobos wanted to put on a show for the 16,201 in attendance - the most this season at The Pit - or maybe it was the return of Joel Box - who quit on Dec.

Autumn Chacon, spokeswoman for the student group, said the person who got the shirt was getting a good deal. "Anywhere else, that would go for thousands of dollars," she said.
