Word Revolution hosts SUB Slams

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Poetry's legacy continues at UNM. There was a revival of readings and performance in the late 19th century, said Aaron Cuffee of the Albuquerque Slam Poetry Team. Then the beats brought it back in the '50s and '60s. "My response has been it never went anywhere.

Opera ode to N.M. culture

by Maria Staiano-Daniels Daily Lobo When some people hear the word opera they envision something set in a far-off country and sung in Italian. This is not so for "Little Jo," showing at the National Hispanic Cultural Center this weekend. "Little Jo," sung in English and Spanish, deals with village life in a northern New Mexico farming town in the 1920s.

Column: Parenting for the parents

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist There I am - sitting in the dark, laughing through some silly previews, munching on cholesterol-ridden popcorn, happily filling my arteries with fat and sucking down caffeine-laden soda. Mostly just looking forward to two hours of escape from the daily stress called my life.

Letter: United Way urges UNM to continue generosity

Editor, I wish to respond to the letter on the United Way printed in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. "Because of you, my brothers and I ate this weekend." "Because of you, I escaped from a life of domestic violence." "Because of you, I have the chance to see my son become the man I always knew he could be.

Letter: Faculty leaves because funds go to administrators

Editor, Regarding the story in Monday's Daily Lobo on the flight of faculty from UNM, Provost Reed Dasenbrock stated that UNM cannot afford to pay upper-level faculty the six-figure salaries that other institutions can. Why, then, are we able to pay six-figure salaries to a growing number of administrators like himself? I guess these people are more important to the University than a top-notch physicist or historian.

The revolution that wasn't

by John Bear Daily Lobo Normally I run screaming and flailing my arms from press releases, but Dennis Lyxzen, lead singer of the (International) Noise Conspiracy, said something that caught my eye. "Make no mistake about it, we are a revolutionary, anti-capitalist, Marxist, Communist rock band," he said.

Editor, Our president - a former oil company CEO, a man who once said the United States needed an energy bill that encourages consumption, a man whose vice president is also a former CEO of an energy company - is now begging the American public to conserve electricity, carpool, use public transportation and not travel at all.

Mature comedy perverts the Bible

by Maria Staiano-Daniels Daily Lobo "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told" opens with a warning read by an announcer. "This play contains sex, nudity and mature themes," she said. "Tell your friends." The audience cheered loudly. The play is definitely not for children, religious conservatives or people who don't like sex jokes - if such people exist.

Letter: UNM's call for donations irks underpaid employee

Editor, I am a little perturbed that UNM is asking me to contribute to the United Way, when I still have no idea whether I or others represented by our union will be getting a raise. I am glad to contribute to the United Way, but it's a bit of a slap in the face to be asked to contribute when UNM obviously does not value all of its employees.

Column: Effect of Red Bull is bull

by Samara Alpern Daily Lobo columnist Whether you're facing a boatload of homework, a double shift at work or just a plain old boring life, nothing gives you cracked-out vigor like a Red Bull. Sure, it may taste like medicine, but that's how you know it works, right? The Red Bull we are familiar with is an Austrian version of a Thai energy drink.

Neil Young album rehashes old sounds
